First Year, 1 September 1971, King's Cross Station

This was it.

Platform 9 ¾.

Lily Evans looked back at the solid barrier that she had just walked through.

"I love magic!" she whispered to herself in breathless amazement as the eleven year-old turned and stood transfixed at the scene in front of her.

Her vision was largely occupied by the magnificent scarlet train bearing the crest of Hogwarts, billowing steam that flooded the platform. The excitement in the air was palpable as hordes of students and parents elbowed their way through the platform, their voices buzzing through the mist. It was slightly obvious, by the mixed look of anticipation and anxiety in their eyes, who the first years were among the rest of the students. The first years also hung around by themselves or with their parents, whereas the seniors loitered around in their own cliques.

She caught sight of Severus Snape, the first wizard friend she ever made and gave him a little wave. He gestured her to join him. Lily nodded in reply, and looked around one last time to capture this moment forever.

They are the people she was going to share the seven years of her wizarding education with, Lily thought.

They are the ones whom she's going to be friends with.

They are the-

"Ow !" Lily cried, stumbling slightly as she grabbed her foot in pain. She held on to her trolley with one hand and looked up to find the culprit.

It was a boy (who looked about the same age as her), with black hair (which managed to look both untidy and neat at the same time, she thought surprisingly) who ran over her foot with his trolley. The boy turned back as he continued walking and said to her, "Hey, watch it! Standing in the way, aren't you?" with a cocky sideways grin at her, which bore no hint of apology.

What?

He was blaming her?

Unbelievable.

"B-but I wasn't even..!" She sputtered at his retreating back, chagrined by his unjustified accusation. After shooting a scathing look at the boy's back, Lily turned her attention back to her sore foot.

She didn't notice the black-haired boy who had turned back to look at her again curiously, with hazel eyes hidden behind glasses. He watched her for a while with amusement (and perhaps a tad bit of guilt), as she hopped around her trolley nursing her foot. With a smile to himself, James Potter walked away to board the train.
