Sixth-year Lily Evans was at Three Broomsticks with Marlene McKinnon and Dorcas Meadows on Valentine's Day. Coincidentally, all three friends had recently broken up with their boyfriends and were dateless for the day. Lily's ex-boyfriend was Robbie Smithson, Captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.

Lily looked up from her drink to see James Potter and Caroline Linney sitting across from each other at a table in front of her. They were chatting happily. Caroline was an attractive Chaser on the Hufflepuff team and had dark blonde hair. James and Caroline had been dating for about a month.

For reasons that Lily couldn't explain herself, the scene in front of her annoyed her. But why was she annoyed? When sixth year had begun, James didn't act like such an irritating idiot anymore. He stopped flirting with her and he didn't hex people as much as he did before. James and Lily were at a place where they would cordially greet each other when they passed each other, but they weren't quite friends yet.

Regardless of James having toned down, he was still an arrogant toerag. Why did it bother her if he was on a date with some stupid blonde? Why was she insulting his girlfriend who was actually a nice person? It wasn't in her nature to insult someone for no good reason.

'I'm just lonely because it's Valentine's Day,' Lily told herself.

Lily felt an irrational surge of anger when she saw James and Caroline leaned across their table in a kiss. She had the urge to walk over and hex Caroline. But this wasn't like her. Why was she so annoyed by the lovebirds in front of her? James was an irritating idiot and an arrogant toerag. She didn't fancy him. She wondered what it would be like to be in Caroline's place kissing him. No. Her loneliness on Valentine's Day was getting to her head. James was not her type. She didn't fancy him.

Or did she?
