It Takes A Man
Prompt: It Takes A Man- Chris Young

She locked her fingers and bowed her head.
She said, "I'm late and I'm really scared.
You can go, but I hope you stay.
I'm gonna keep it either way."

Emily sat in the passenger seat of Derek's car. She took a deep breath and spoke the words that would change everything between them. "Derek, I'm pregnant. I was late, so I took a test and it was positive. I'm going to go to the doctor and verifying it. You don't have to stay with me, just don't hate me because I love you. I'm keeping it no matter what."

In my daddy's El Camino,
In her driveway in the rain,
Staring through that windshield,
I can see my future change.
And my heart hit like a hammer
And my thoughts were running wild.
Any fool can make a baby,
But it takes a man to raise a child.

Derek was definitely shocked. He wasn't expecting any type of news like this when she asked him to come over and talk. This changed everything for them. His heart was pounding and his hands were sweating as he heard the rain pelting the roof.

I lay my head down on the wheel.
She said, "I know, it don't seem real."
She closed her eyes, but the tears flowed through.
She said, "Don't hate me for loving you."

Derek lay his head on the wheel. He had no idea what to say. It felt like this was ome weird dream, not reality.

Emily noticed he wasn't saying anything and she began to cry.

I could not reassure her,
I couldn't say what I had planned,
Couldn't put three words together,
So I just took her hand.

Derek didn't say anything, he couldn't say anything. He lifted his head up and grabbed her hand, holding it tight. He smiled at her as he wiped her already drying tears and the ones falling at the moment. He squeezed her hand and said, "I'm staying right here, Emily. With you."
