Beth had been wary, the first time the mohawked boy appeared in her kitchen. Shelby had held her protectively, as Beth eyed the stranger uneasily. But Puck wasn't about to give up, presenting the little girl with his clown-pig drawing. Beth had given the tiniest of smiles, making his heart melt.
The second time he had appeared, it wasn't so sudden. He had spoken to Shelby that day at school, turning up on her doorstep at dinner time. Beth had glanced at him, and without a second look, returned to the peaches Shelby was feeding her. Upon wiping her face, Shelby had offered the one year old to the boy, but Beth had shied, hiding her face bashfully in Shelby's neck. The brunette had looked apologetic, but Puck had held up his hands in understanding.
The third time Puck had turned up, he had brought a guest with him. Quinn, the pink having grown almost completely out. She had been worried about meeting the little girl she had given up, and had almost broken down, upon seeing her blonde curls. Shelby had taken her aside, leading her down the hallway, leaving Beth in her playpen with only Puck for company. Screwing up her face for a scream (it was only natural that she would inherit the lungs of both her parents- and Shelby's impressive vocal range), Puck panicked and picked up the closest toy, making it dance in front of him. The little girl let out her breath, watching as the toy cautiously danced, just out of her reach.
The fourth time Puck had turned up on Shelby's doorstep, Beth had waved from her highchair, being a stranger no more to the little girl. he had grinned and ruffled her tiny curls, making her giggle. Shelby watched the interaction with a smile on her face, and proposed the fifth meeting.
Where Puck would stay with the little girl, while she went out to meet up with friends. Puck was reluctant at first- what if he screwed up? Shelby wouldn't be there to fix everything, to calm the baby's wails.
But it was fine. Beth was happy to settle in his arms, giggling at the Dora the Explorer DVD on repeat on the TV. She laughed as he made her toys dance. She gave him a countless amount of toothless grins, making him smile like a soppy idiot.
Her smile was just like his.
When Shelby opened the door later that night, she expected to find Puck channel surfing on her couch, pigging out on the junk food she had stocked up her cabinets with. Instead, she found the Dora DVD still playing, as Puck cradled the little girl in his arms, the pair asleep.
With identical smiles on their faces.
