Home!
Daniel Boone was home. All 6ft 4inches of him jackknifed into the largest chair they owned, talking happily to his children, while inhaling a plate of rabbit stew.
Home!
If she had known for sure he was coming today, she would have fixed something a little nicer, a bit more substantial. But she wasn't complaining, that was part and parcel of being married to the man, never sure when he might return but always certain that he would.
Home!
She knew deep in her heart that there was always the chance that he might not come back to them. But it would not be his choice; it would be a decision, taken out of his hands. . No, he wasn't invincible, but he did give the appearance of being such. Come hell or high water, Daniel Boone would to the best of ability arrive home. Watching him now, eating his weight in cornbread, laughing over Hannibal's latest trick, his hair hanging softly in his eyes, she knew this was true.
Home!
Later tonight after the children were asleep she would heat water and wipe all the grime away from his tired body. She would take inventory of every new scar, bump and bruise, marveling that he was still in one piece and he would laugh at her and tell her that it wasn't really anything and did she remember the time?
Home!
She would lay with him in bed tonight, a bed no longer empty and cold on one side and he would hold her and tell her everything she wished to know of this journey. He wasn't one for untruths or holding back and even though many of the things he would tell her, would make her worry all the more the next time, she knew that with God, Ticklicker and Mingo on his side, nothing could really go wrong. Not for long.
Then in the dark of the night, the only sound being the beating of their hearts, they would make love, sweet and full of passion. Afterwards he would hold her close and in that moment they were just Dan and Becky Boone, soul mates, lovers, husband and wife. Content only with one another.
