What he's always wanted.
The army was a perfect plan….of distraction, of course.
He would be unavailable to the world, seemingly immersed in the discipline of military life; no one would expect contact from him.
In the meantime, it gave him months to finally solidify his life.
He moved to New York, but he didn't follow her. He had no idea where she was, that wasn't the point.
He spent everything he had and then some for a small apartment in Manhattan.
But he still needed more.
So, he worked every job that could fit in the confines of a 24-hour schedule.
Any spare second was spent fixing up the apartment, making it theirs.
He was especially proud finding a Barbra Streisand poster. He framed it and hung it up in the living room along with other Broadway favorites.
He stayed awake at night, looking through photo albums of them. From sophomore year to now, he printed out his favorites and they filled the walls of their small bedroom.
The only thing that would have been better was to have her under the covers, flipping through the pages with him as they eventually fell asleep without a care in the world.
He dreamed of that day, so he kept working.
He swears he sees her in Central Park one day, so he awkwardly dodges behind a bush.
She is as confident as ever, rocking a new wardrobe. She looks breathtaking.
She has called him every week since graduation, and it takes everything to let it keep ringing.
Finn wants nothing more than to hurdle over the bush and wrap her in his arms forever.
But he doesn't.
Only when its ready, he thinks to himself.
Days later the job is done.
The apartment screams Finn and Rachel, and he can't wait to show her.
He imagines opening the door and turning her around.
She will squiel and jump, making him smile for an eternity.
Then she will radiate to his arms and kiss him until their lips hurt.
They'll live there until he makes it big doing who knows what, and she makes it bigger being the star she was meant to be.
They'll get married, have a family, and ride off into the sunset
Luckily, it's not hard to track down his brother's apartment number.
He's going to see him and find out where Rachel is.
So he throws on a normal t-shirt and hoodie and grabs a cab.
Walking up to the door, he hears giggles and assumes it's just some fashion friends of Kurt.
He knocks without any hesitation, although there is hesitation on the other side.
So he waits there until the door is opened.
Only it's opened by her.
He first notices how gorgeous she looks under the dim lighting.
He notices her astonished face.
And then he notices the guy in the background.
There is pizza and candles scattered around the floor and he's starting to get the idea.
He looks down at her, his face asking one word.
Why?
His heart is breaking fast, but he remains in the doorway, hoping she'll clue him in.
She isn't answering, and he mentally destroys the last three months of his life, every cent going to make their life what they've always wanted.
And then he realizes maybe it's only what he's always wanted.
A/N: I didn't get to see last week's Glee episode (thank you, architecture school) but this was just the bit of Glee I needed to get off my chest. There might be a few other chapters to this if there's interest, so let me know. Thanks guys!
