I was amused to see the cinematic Captain von Trapp's similarity to the real life Admiral Spruance and so decided to make a short story based on their meeting.
1937:
The Captain was visiting Newport to speak by invitation at the War College. The school was crowded with men, not young exactly. But not all old either. Some had known the last war and some would lead the nation in the war the Professor said was coming. The Professor-Captain Raymond- reminded Maria so much of Georg. He was stoic in mood, with an intellectual's mind. He set his powerful mind to all things naval. Maria would have been afraid to be his enemy.
His one indulgence seemed to be coffee. Captain Raymond was a gourmet in that regard, and acquired the best he could get, and roasted it personally. Over many a cup he and Georg talked into the wee hours of the night.
When Georg and Maria left, Georg said, "He will be a great man someday". Maria asked, "You think so?" Georg said, "It is hard to tell because he is so impenetrable but there is a MIND inside that man.
Maria teased him: "Maybe he just reminds you of you?"
