I've never tried writing this pairing before...huh. Let's hope it's not a total failure or something.

Written as a gift for kegin on Live Journal. ^^;

Diplomatic Struggles

Sakura had always believed herself to be an icon of calm in matters of everything and anything really.

She was friends with Naruto after all; she was a student of both Kakashi and Tsunade and a medic at one of Konoha's most prestigious shinobi hospitals...for God's sake, she was actually able to withstand a weekly lunch with 'the green beasts of Konoha' on top of having to patch both of them on a daily basis due to strenuous training (which, in her opinion, fell somewhere between clinically insane - no pun intended - and obsessively suicidal)!

It had always been so very obvious to her that if one, anyone, could withstand all those and still keep a sane mind-frame, that someone had the potential of being some sort of second Kakashi!

She'd forgotten that there were worse things in life than dealing with a bunch of immature men...

"Is there something bothering you?" Gaara raised his eyes from the papers they had been analyzing and Sakura sighed quietly, realizing that she'd managed to space out yet again.

"Just a bunch of minor details, Lord Kazekage."

"Gaara." He punctuated dutifully. For the umpteenth time that day.

Sakura crossed her arms, with an added tilt of her lips. "Gaara then...would you mind telling the 'minor details' by the door to please stop adoring you so intensely? I can feel the chill of their glares in my back all the way here." She was beginning to feel twitchy about it and the impulse to look over her shoulder was getting stronger.

A ninja's instinct.

Of course, she couldn't really throw the blame on the group of preteen - three of them to be precise - girls hiding behind the potted plants situated on each side of the restaurant doors. Even if they were a little psychotic...

She was in a restaurant with the - handsome, unapproachable, strong and sexy - Lord Gaara, supposedly discussing important village business.

Snort. If any woman had been caught doing such a thing with Sasuke in her adolescent years, she and Ino would've probably gouged her eyes out with a dull spoon.

"You shouldn't bother yourself with such unimportant issues" Gaara responded dryly, shifting his eyes to subtly search for his pursuers. "I am used to them."

Sakura nearly laughed, putting on a straight face when Gaara swerved his gaze towards her. Of course, he knew...it wasn't like she could fool him for real. "So you go through constant surveillance each and every day? And allow it?"

He didn't even blink. "Yes."

"Really?"

A solemn nod.

"So then you won't mind if I ask them to join us to lunch?" Sakura smiled giddily. "It'll convince them that there's nothing between us!"

"Don't push it."

"Awww, come on. I'll even let them share the love-seat with you! A ruler must be close to everyone in the village in all possible ways. I mean...you'll never believe the sacrifices that Naruto does for the female population of Konoha!"

Gaara looked distinctly unamused - and slightly disgruntled - by her affirmations and Sakura thought that he indeed believed the sacrifices that Naruto did.

I wanted it to come out romantic somehow. Obviously, that didn't succeed. xDD
