Voice of Distortion
"Monster, am I?" Rose walked forward. "And what constitutes a monster?"
"You've done all this and still you have the nerve to ask what makes you a monster?" the soldier managed to sneer. "Look around you. You've just burned down this entire village, slaughtered dozens of innocent people, and still you profess your innocence? You disgust me if you still don't know why we call you what I do."
The man was silenced as the rapier cut his windpipe. "You know nothing about why I do this."
"No, they know nothing about why I do this," Rose looked back at the burning village.
"Still, though. That man was right. He really didn't do anything to deserve to die," she looked back. "Still, I couldn't let them live."
And what if you made a mistake? A little voice inside her asked. Then you would have done all that for nothing. Then all those deaths would be for naught.
"I had no choice in the matter," Rose shook her head. "I had to do what I did because if I didn't then everyone would suffer the same fate that one village did."
And who said that they wanted to be saved? Who asked to be rescued by a monster by you?
"I'm not fighting for thanks. I'm in this because I truly believe in this world. I really want this planet and the people who live in it see the light of the other day."
You'll only get hatred and scorn if you don't ask for any thanks. Your making enemies out of the very things you're trying to protect.
"Sacrifices must be made for anything. Without tragedy there can't be any redemption. It's all for the greater good."
Some say that the path to Hell is paved with good intentions.
"People can think what they will. This has kept me alive for over 11,000 years. I won't just stop because people call me a monster."
And saying that your fighting for the people is doing what? Nobody will believe you. Death is inevitable, and when you die there will be no one willing to take up the fight.
"Everything dies. It's the way that things happen; people are born, grow old, and then die; it's the same with all beings."
Then why fight at all? Why cling to life when death is inevitable? Think how meaningless all life really is?
"Death is a natural part of the cycle of life, but a death count on that scale wouldn't be natural. A lifetime may end, but life is eternal. That is the way it is."
It sounds nice when you say for the world; almost makes you seem justified, but are you really? The God of Destruction is the fate predetermined by Soa; what makes you think that you have any right to go against his will?
"Even if it's fate do we have to like it? Sometimes I wonder why I cling to life when I know I must die, but I've found the answers in everyday living. I enjoy life, and as long as I do I will never accept that fate that the world is to be destroyed. I'll fight for what I believe in; even if that takes me to face Soa himself."
Some would think that ambition alone makes you a monster.
Rose turned and walked away from the site. "Then so be it."
