MOTHERLY LOVE
CHAPTER 1
Lisbon stopped and glanced over Jane's slumbering body remarking how sweetly innocent he looked curled up on the battered leather sofa.
"Lisbon?" he asked with his eyes closed
"Simon Hedges, was found in his bedroom this morning shot in the head," she answered
Patrick Jane sat up and flexed his bunched up muscles.
"The philanthropist?" he asked "He always seems such a happy person,"
"Yeah," Lisbon said in surprise
"Who found him?"
Lisbon looked at the report before answering.
"Says his wife came back from a meeting she had yesterday and found him holding his gun,"
She noticed the unconvinced look on his face before continuing.
"Mrs Hedges says that her husband couldn't have killed himself because he had a fear of guns, he always kept it empty in the top drawer as a scare tactic apparently he didn't even have bullets for it,"
"Then we speak to Mrs Hedges," Jane said cheerfully
It wasn't long before Lisbon and Jane found themselves pulling up in front of a large mansion.
"Nice very nice," Jane said approvingly as he got out of the car
"Now I get it, if he had all this why would he kill himself?" Lisbon asked thoughtfully
"That's what we're going to find out," Jane replied as they walked up the steps towards the door
A maid answered the door.
"Yes?" She asked in a quavering voice
Jane looked at her sympathetically and decided to use a soft approach.
"Err good morning, we're with CBI can we speak to Mrs Hedges please?" he asked
"You better come in," the maid said opening the door wider
Lisbon and Jane were taken to a large living room where they found a smartly dressed woman with red hair and blue eyes sat on a sofa.
"Mrs Hedges?" Lisbon asked
"Yes?" she replied tearfully
"We're with CBI I'm Agent Lisbon this is my colleague Mr Jane, can we ask you some questions?" Lisbon asked
Mrs Hedges mopped the tears and composed herself.
"Ok,"
"You say your husband was frightened of guns?" Jane asked
"Yes...yes that's right," she answered
"Any idea why?" he pressed
"A childhood incident, his brother accidentally killed himself with one Simon swore never to use one after that,"
"Yet he kept one," Jane said
"As a scare tactic, he never kept any bullets," she answered
"And yet he managed to get some and shoot himself," Jane said thoughtfully
"I don't know where he could have got them from,"
The door swung open and a sixteen year old boy hurried into the room.
"Mom," he said worriedly
"It's ok Stephen," she replied getting up and hugging him tightly
"Just one more question Mrs Hedges," Jane said quickly
She looked at him.
"Can you tell us where you were yesterday?" he asked
"I was at a conference yesterday" she replied
Jane nodded understandingly.
"Can anyone verify that?" Lisbon asked
"My colleague Dr Psyche Dean," Mrs Hedges replied
Jane felt a penny drop the same time his heart pounded against his chest.
"Wait," Jane said in surprise "Psyche Honoria Dean?" he asked
"Yes," she replied
"Well I'll be," he said under is breath
Lisbon felt that it was time to wrap things up.
"We'll keep in touch Mrs Hedges," she said before steering Jane toward the door
Lisbon got in her car and impatiently waited for Jane to get in.
"Who is Psyche Dean?" she asked
"Quite simply, my childhood sweetheart and the only woman to have ever broken my heart," he replied
"Whatchya do to deserve that?" Lisbon asked
Jane paused for a moment.
"I asked her to marry me,"
"What?" Lisbon said with a chuckle
"We were seventeen and we were in love and when I proposed she turned me down," Jane answered
"You poor guy," she said sarcastically before driving away
