Last summer
He saw her just as Paul set in motion a particularly hard serve.
Two days ago Embry had been on his way to meet Paul and Jake for drinks when he spotted her looking at souvenirs offered by one of the local vendors. He watched as she paid for her items, smiling at the clerk and thanking him. That smile had stolen the breath from his lungs.
Keeping his distance, he followed her, trying to work up the courage to speak to her – watching her weave herself in and out amongst the locals and tourists enjoying a night out on the pier. It was a popular place. One of the main attractions in town, with live music and restaurants as well as shopping and an abundance of night time entertainment.
But somewhere along the way, he'd lost sight of her. Realizing he was already thirty minutes late, he'd finally given up his search – hopeful, but doubtful that he'd ever see her again.
But there she was – walking down the beach with her face tilted towards the sun.
And then everything went black. Embry was so focused on her that he had missed Paul yelling "Watch out!" The volleyball slammed into the side of his head with enough force to knock him out cold.
He didn't know how long he had been out, but he awoke to the sweet sound of her voice.
His heartbeat quickened as he opened his eyes to see her leaning over him.
"Beautiful." He breathed. He could hear his friends laughing in the background causing his cheeks to tinge pink.
She giggled softly before her worry took over. "Oh, thank god. I'm Bella. A nurse. Are you okay? Dizzy? Blurry vision? You took a pretty good lick to your head." Her words coming out quickly.
"Yeah, um, I'm fine. No dizziness or anything." He answered.
"Okay, well, maybe your friends should take you home. Put some ice on your face." Bella stated, running her fingers softly over his cheek.
Embry panicked at the thought of her leaving. "Go out with me tonight?" He blurted. "As a thank you...for saving me." He finished, cheeks turning pink once again.
Bella stared into his eyes before looking away. "I..I don't think I would feel comfortable going out with a complete stranger."
"Hey." He said, reassuring her. "It's okay...I understand."
As he stood there feeling dejected, watching her walk away, taking a piece of his heart with her, she called out to him.
"Hey Spike." She turned, walking backwards. It was only then he realized he didn't tell her his name.
"Embry. My name is Embry." He responded, impressed with her use of volleyball terminology.
"Embry." She repeated with a grin. "You know if we were to, say, run into each other again...we wouldn't be strangers anymore."
His smile was blinding. "I'll keep that in mind."
"See you around, Embry." She said, before turning back in the direction she had been heading.
Finding her had became his mission. And he did – at a poolside bar – later that night. They spent the next two weeks together, nearly inseparable, before she left to return home.
He hadn't seen her since.
My first drabble attempt. Let me know what you think!
