Trust is a two way street, pain is not.
Nate trusted Sophie, Sophie trusted Nate.
Sophie trusted Nate to have a plan. She trusted him to get the job done. She trusted him to do the right thing. She trusted him to keep the broken team on the right path. She trusted him to support her. She trusted him to keep her safe and she trusted him to be there for her, for as long as they both shall live.
Nate trusted Sophie to tell him when he was going too far. He trusted her to be there for him, even on his darkest days. He trusted her to have his back on jobs. He trusted her to trust his judgement. He trusted her to know him perhaps better than he knew himself. He trusted her to say yes when he got down on one knee in their Portland office and he trusted her to be there for him as long as they both shall live.
Yes, Sophie and Nate both trusted each other to the ends of the earth. They trusted each other with their lives. In their line of work, trust was a necessity between your team. In fact in a relationship, trust was a necessity. Sophie expected Nate to trust her and Nate expected Sophie to trust him. He did not, however, expect her to feel his pain.
He didn't expect her to understand how broken he was. He didn't expect her to know the dark and dangerous thoughts which whirled in his mind. He didn't expect her to know how painful it was to look at their new born daughter. He didn't expect her to understand why his new, beautiful baby girl caused his heart to ache. He didn't expect her to feel his pain, nor did he want her to.
After all, Nate believed that trust should be a two way street but pain, pain should only ever be the burden of one person.
But, truthfully, Nate didn't care about the pain. He had a wife, and a daughter and a family which he had come to trust, and to love, with his life.
Pain may not be a two way street but, like trust, love was. And that, well, that was something which made up for the pain ten times over.
