Nikita

"You look just like Hannah."

Hannah. That was my mother, and she had been dead for years. All the people in my village destroyed by the war, expect for the few had escape or been out of town. The man in front of me was one of the lucky few, a merchant who had been out of town when it happened. He had lost his family of course, but he wasn't there to watch the blood bath. I smiled sweetly and nodded. I had heard it before, I only remembered that both my Mother and I had pale skin and green eyes.

I had worked in this tavern for almost a year now, and I saw a familiar face or two. Just people trying to make their way through and live their life. They would say hello, order a drink, and no more. I was a ghost of their past that they just wanted to forget, and I could sympathize with that. Seeing them brought back memories for me as well, the little ones that I had. I was six at the time, and it was a haze. The soldiers uniforms were a tan color, maybe black. They screamed in a foreign language I couldn't understand. My mother and Father were in a panic, my brother carrying me off to the flower field, and I cried. That memory haunted me every night, them taking him away from me, carrying me off, and all I could do was run. I placed my fingers on the worn out gold locket around my neck and sighed softly.

"Nikita! Stop standing around!"

Mr. Hiaoki, he was a nice man. Plump and greying, he had lost his wife a few years ago and now ran this place. I gave him a soft smile, and carried off drinks to the table. He had even given me a room to stay in for free, this place was my new home and life. If I wasn't here, I was at the town market. I smiled sweetly, at the male as I handed him his drink and then made my way back over to the bar. I wouldn't have much longer until the night was over, an hour or two at the least. I hummed a light and happy tune softly, starring off as the music played and everyone seemed happy. The war was at a light time, and everyone could relax for now, that was until the armies started up once again.

The time passed quickly, and now almost everyone was gone. I sat on an empty stool at the bar, my green eyes starring off into space once again. There were only two other bar maidens than me and they were long gone by now. We were easily recognizable by our uniforms, a white off the shoulder dress with a red corset covering it, it was also covered by a black flowing skirt that was covered in small intricate white flower designs. "Ni, you can go ahead and off to bed. I can clean it from here." gave me a large smile, as he ran the old rag over the counter.

"It's alright really, I don't mind helping!" I said with a soft smile, jumping to my feet and collecting the empty dishes off the tables. and I were almost like the same, he had nothing or no one expect for this old place. He was like a second father to me, he hired me right off the spot. I was seventeen then, and he didn't mind. 'The young had to learn to work hard nowadays." Were his exact words. We finished cleaning the place in an hour or so, he gave me a nod of the head and then headed upstairs to his own room. I wasn't exactly tired yet, my mind still restless.

I headed off to my own room, grabbing the black cloak that had been my mothers. It smelt of lilacs and smoke, in a way it comforted me. I slipped it over my shoulders. I always went for a walk, this small rural town was no where near dangerous at night. Sure it had it's number of theives and criminals, but nothing serious. I was more than capable of handling myself, at least I made it seem that way. I stepped out the door and into the cold winter weather.
