Chapter #1

The beginning of Rawina's Story

Rowina ran to the back of the store while her dear friend Kailey distracted the store owners with the crazy punishments her parents gave her for the stupidest reasons and her hilarious true school stories. She quickly snatched a diet Pepsi for herself and a blueberry muffin for them to share. Knowing Kailey preferred regular Pepsi she snatched one of those. Hoping Kailey wasn't running out of stories she grabbed a couple teen magazines like bop and teen people and exited through the back door and hid the stuff in the bush and ran to the side and yelled, "Kailey, help! Someone's stealing my bag."

Knowing the signal she ran hastily waving good bye and said she must go. "Got everything?" Kailey asked. Sadly Rowina knew they couldn't return here and she thanked god their small town was famous for its many convenience stores and the leather one. Rowina nodded and went to get the stuff, but when she was grabbing it all Rowina realised there was something else. A book.

"Kailey!" She called, a nervous note drumming in her voice. A few moments later Kailey was by her side. "Where did this come from?" Rowina asked her friend. She read the cover. "Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens." Rowina held her breath. Twist. That was her last name and she knew she hadn't touched a book at all in the past two months so that could not be hers.

Kailey looked blankly at Rowina, "'Kay, not cool. Who reads books in the summer? Anyways I just got to here and why would I want a book before school." Kailey added. She was assuming Rowina was just trying to prank her.

"I know." Rowina tartly replied, "Even then I hardly even touch them." Rowina was telling the truth, she much rather wrote some. This freaked out Rowina, if neither of them went near a book how did this one get there. "How 'bout we just check to see if it belongs to someone and if there is a name we'll know somebody just dropped it." Suggested the confused girl.

Kailey nodded her agreement and reached out to grab the book. They both had a hold of it, lifted it up and opened it. There was a blinding bolt of bright lights. Everything started spinning and then the reality meshed with the colours until the colours were all they could see, spinning around and around. The girls began to get dizzy as they watched the colours. In another blast of light the world went normal, or almost.

Every thing was darker there were no trees except in the yards of really big houses. Were there were concrete roads there was now cobble stone streets, the houses were thin and dull. People were walking around in puffy dresses and tuxedoes and looked kind of like the people from history text books during the time around the independence war. Rowina and Kailey looked at themselves, they must have looked really odd in denim pants and tee shirts and running shoes.

Rowina would have stepped out had she not seen some one else in different clothes from the rest of the people but it was a much different look from what they were in. They decided to watch the boy in a top hat, lengthy patched coat, brown patched leggings and stomp boots. A feeling almost unfamiliar to Rawina crept through her body; fear. It clung to the air around her, Rawina knew Kailey felt it too and she was probably just as baffled about how they got there from stealing some goodies. Remembering what now seemed to be a blur she glanced at were the stuff had been and realized she still had it in her hand. She handed the Pepsi over to Kailey.

Kailey broke the silence and thanked her. "I think we should keep an eye on that kid, he's different from everyone else."Kailey suggested a suspicious tone her voice. A hard look on her face. Kailey was serious over this and I knew there was no reason.
