Yumi Yoshimura was on the street corner in Osaka begging for change. She held out a top hat and, if she was lucky,people would put money in the hat. You see, Yumi's family was poor. Yumi lived in an old,rusty house that could fall apart at any moment. The only people she lived with were her grandparents,Akio and Mina. They were very old and weak,and rarely got out of bed. They were too handicapped to work so, instead, they would send Yumi out in the street to beg for change. Whatever money that Yumi brought home is whatever the three of them lived off of. Yumi wished that she had a better life.
Ami Onuki was the daughter of a wealthy buisness man, and also a famous popstar. She would get everything that she wanted, because she was rich. Ami had a magnanamous spirit, and was never mean or rude, and she was always polite. While her and her manager Kaz were driving around in Osaka, they saw Yumi begging on the street corner for change."Don't give her any money. Just keep on going, Ami."Kaz whispered in Ami's ear. Ami felt sorry for Yumi and was furious with Kaz. "Why not?"Ami asked. "Beggars are just lazy people, and, chances are, that girl's parents are lazy and want money without working for it."Kaz replied. "I think that it's because you're too cheap! Now stop the bus or you're fired!!!!"Ami yelled. Kaz reluctantly pulled over the bus. Ami hopped out of the bus and approached Yumi, who had fallen asleep. She put the money in the hat and went back in the bus.
When Yumi woke up, she looked in the hat and couldn't believe what she saw. Someone had given her 46,000 yen! (Which is equal to $400 here in the United States.) "Who could have given me this much money?"Yumi said to herself. Yumi went to the store and brought home and electric guitar and started playing music while begging for change. One question remained in her mind : "Who would give me this much money?"
A few weeks later, Ami and Kaz were back in Osaka once again. Ami approached Yumi and asked her if they wanted to start a band together. Yumi said she wasn't sure, and would call Ami was walking home from the streets. When Yumi arrived home, she rushed into the dining room, which didn't even have a table. "Oba-chan! Oji-chan! I want to ask you something!!!!!!" Yumi yelled.
"Do you think that I should start a band with that girl that I was telling you about?"Yumi asked excitedly. "I think that you should follow your dreams and do it." Yumi's grandfather said to her. "I will! I'll go call her right now!!!!!!" Yumi said excitedly.
Ami was watching tv when the phone rang. She picked it up and answered it. "Hello?" Ami asked. "Hey, Ami! I've made up my mind!" Yumi said. "Oh,hi. Are you going to do it?"Ami asked. "Definetly!!!" Yumi replied." Be there in 45!"Yumi added. After that day, the girls formed a band and named it"Puffy Ami Yumi." To this day, they still travel all over the world and perform.
