Forever Is Not Enough

"Do you remember the forensic entomology lecture where we met? You were the only student there not being made to attend, and you were the only one who seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say." He whispered to her sleeping form as he gently took her hand in his.

"After the lecture you stayed to ask me so many questions. I'd never known anyone so thirsty for knowledge."

A frantic beeping sounded a few rooms away and momentarily brought him to the present. He silently prayed he wouldn't have to hear that sound in her room again, like he had so many times these last few days.

He brushed away strands of hair that had fallen across her face as she slept and felt her breath on the back of his hand. She looked so peaceful and calm, just as she had all those days he'd woken too early for work and stayed awake to watch her sleep.

"I thought I'd lost you once before, over three years ago now. She looked so much like you I struggled to believe I'd spoken to you just five minutes before walking into that scene." He sighed as he relived that painful case; the familiar feelings of regret resurfacing. "I had to see your face before I would believe it. She wasn't you but she so easily could have been."

"When you told me last year how you'd heard my confession to Lurie it broke my heart. I'm just thankful I had the chance to explain and we were able to work through it."

A nurse knocked timidly at the door to her room, not wishing to disturb them. He waved her in and waited while she checked all was okay. "I'll leave you two to it" she smiled as she left, closing the door behind her.

"Two years isn't enough for me, forever wouldn't be enough. All that time we wasted seems to matter so much more now. So I need you to come back and help me continue to make it right, to make it up to you one more day at a time."

Hours later she woke to find their fingers interlocked, him sleeping peacefully beside her in a visitors chair. The pain had gone; everything felt like it had just been a nightmare, one that had disappeared upon waking.

She lifted the hand not holding his and gently stroked a finger down his cheek while he slept. "Forever isn't enough for me either" she whispered as she succumbed once again to sleep.

The End
