Howler
Prologue
The sky darkened as I walked across my street. The night was dark and my medium wavy hair jolted with each step. The streetlamps had been destroyed and the only welcome signs of life were the slowly turning off lights inside the rundown houses either side of the road. I glanced at my watch; my mum was going to kill me! It was almost 12:00pm! I glanced up and down the street and jogged to the other side. I finally reached my house and half expected to see Rex, the family dog, run up to me and lick me. Instead I heard a low growl coming from the bushes. I stared in and parted the bushes. Suddenly something huge and black pounced on me and tore into my arm. I screamed in pain and my parents rushed out. My dad had a shotgun. I managed to push the creature away and he shot it, I got caught in the crossfire. I fell to the floor as the creature whined and bounded away. My parents came over to me and slowly, ever so slowly, my world turned to darkness.
Chapter 1
Life sucks. My name is Jack and as you know, I was attacked by a wild animal. (If you don't please read the prologue) A day later I awoke in a hospital drowsy and sick. My body felt as though it has been hit by a truck. I tried to move but every muscle in my body screamed in pain. Then as I scanned my surroundings I saw a doctor sitting at the other end of the room. "Hello Jack, My name is doctor Mashniq and it seems you were attacked by a bear." The doctor edged closer to my bed. "At least...that's what your parents say..." He glanced around the ward. "Have you ever heard of the term...werewolf?" The doctor said giving me a questioning stare. "Aren't they supposed to be these people that can transform into a half-man half-wolf at a full moon?" I replied and relaxed on my bed. "Well Jack, didn't you notice? There was no full moon that night." The doctor paced back and forth. "So what was it?" He was testing my patience now and I could see every single second he got edgier and edgier. "They are called Howlers, Jack," said the doctor resting his hand on my shoulder. "They are always werewolves, they never change, never falter..." He leaned in close to me. "And hunt to kill." The doctor began to speak but before he could it all blurted out. "Does that make me one then?" I said with a high-pitched squeak. The doctor looked at me obviously bemused. "Nonononononononono," he said with a slight laugh to his rattle. "You will become a hybrid, Stuck between the wolf state and the human state, you have everything the werewolf does...just with a human body." The doctor suddenly shook his head. "You aren't ready... I can feel it in your blood." He slowly stood and left the room.
