He cares about you, he always has.
In the SPK's new headquarters, in LA, there sat a small boy, almost albino like, sitting in the middle of the room watching multiple televisions. There were various things on them but the boy seemed to be most interested in two screens specifically. The first television had "breaking news" on it, showing a red car with bullet holes through it. It had someone saying:
"Mrs. Takada's first perpetrator has been captured but we have been unsuccessful in identifying him." The Boy was not stupid, he knew it was Matt. The second television had a SPK member, Hal Lidner, talking to the boy.
"Near, it's been confirmed that Mello, is in fact, dead."
"Very well, that much was obvious. Thank you, Lidner."
The communication on the second television was cut off by Near. Matt and Mello, the two people who were almost his friends, were dead. No doubt he was upset but Near, of course, didn't realize it.
The albino turned off all the computers and televisions and he sat in silence twirling a strand of his hair. He felt a tear fall down his cheek and hit the floor. The boy was shocked. Was that a … tear? impossible.
Near debated this predicament for a few minutes then turned on a computer and contacted commander Rester.
"Rester, it seems we have a problem. There appears to be tear gas in the hotel." He spoke so calmly but in truth he, himself, was actually confused and terrified. He has never dealt with something like this before.
"That's impossible Near. We had put gas detectors in the room before you came. If there was any sort of gas you would have known well before it affected you."
"Then why did a tear fall from my eye? The only time one cries is when one is sad, hurt and in a rare case, happy."
Rester was silent for a moment; he was not sure what to say. He was a smart man, Rester, he knew Near was not hurt physically and he was certain Near was not crying tears of joy. So he was… sad?
"Near? Have you seen anything that might have upset you?"
"I do not believe so. The only thing I have watched was a new broadcast showing the death of a boy I knew back at Whammy's house, Matt. Also, Lidner confirmed Mello's death." Near speaks with such calmness that it would seem normal for him but something was different. This calmness was an eerie, almost saddening calm.
"Near is it possible that you are upset that these two boys died?"
"No, highly improbable."
In reality, Near knew that was most likely the case. 98% sure of it. In this state, Rester could see right through Near and he knew the truth but decided to leave it alone.
"I'm sorry, Near. I need to go. Lidner wants to speak with with me. I will check back later."
"Very well."
Near cut off the connection, again and ponders on Rester's idea. He trusted Rester, enough to have his judgement be important to him. So, when Rester suggested that Matt and Mello's death had caused him to be upset he knew it was true.
Even if Mello had hated the albino, hurt him and always competed with him. He was the closest thing Near had to a close friend or even a friend in general. He liked Mello; he always put up some sort of fight even if Near won all the time.
Same goes with Matt. Anytime Matt hurt the albino, Matt had always been there, helping Near up off the ground and apologizing for the blonde.
Near's only two friends, dead. He couldn't help feel somewhat responsible. Maybe if he had let Mello win a couple times…? No. He could not afford to be thinking like that when he was so close to finishing the 'Kira' case. Unfortunately, he could not stop the tears and hours of endless crying that was sure to come. He missed them already.
