Spiders and Butterflies
Ok, I think I got Hiei more in character this time. But, I'll let you be the judge of that.
Deep garnet orbs observed silently as the butterfly struggled against binds as thin as a strand of hair, but was unable to free itself.
It was a pretty butterfly; even the owner of these piercing eyes had to admit. Coming from almost anyone else, the statement would have been vague and a little meaningless; however, he was not exactly known for his appreciation of beauty.
But…It was a very pretty butterfly. Its small black body was slim, but not so small it was hidden by its wings, which were large and elegant. Two edged ovals fastened seamlessly beside each other in the classic butterfly shape looked unique and beautiful instead of common or plain. Royal blue faded into Robin's Egg from tip to tip on each one and black dots meant to confuse birds gave it the appearance of searching one's very soul.
It began to struggle more violently as a large black dot revealed itself, no longer hidden by emerald curtains. The butterfly must have been reacting to some deeply buried survival instinct because it was impossible that it could see the large black spider almost gracefully crossing its home, the strangest elegance in the way its own feet never caught.
Again the lovely insect thrashed about, trying with all of its energy to break free. But the spider's web was perfect, thin and almost transparent even in sunlight. Flexible so it swayed in the breeze and moved with the desperate thrashing instead of breaking.
The eight-legged creature was beside it quickly, and large black fangs were instantly embedded in its fragile black abdomen. The desperate struggling stopped suddenly, the spider's venom taking effect.
Dark rubies gazed on emotionlessly as the spider began its new task of wrapping its prey in the same silk binding of which it had made its home. Many people would call this semi-innocent creature evil for ending the life of something so beautiful, and, indeed, it was a shame to lose something so lovely. But the spider had to eat.
The spider had committed no crime and therefore felt no guilt. It had no understanding of the butterfly or of its beauty. All it really understood was that it would not go hungry tonight.
"Hiei," a soft voice tore his eyes away from the spider, almost finished with its work, to a familiar girl standing under the tree where the scene had unfolded, looking up at him with bright amethyst eyes. Her sky blue hair, so similar yet different from the color of the butterfly, was pulled into a high ponytail held fast by a thin red tie. Her pink kimono swayed around her fragile form as the light spring breeze played with the loose cloth and strands of hair. A sparkling smile formed on her lips as she met his blood red orbs without hesitation. "Are you coming?"
Hiei remained silent but appeared at her side faster than her pretty eyes could follow. He almost smiled as they walked away, so close that their hands brushed against each other occasionally. In the end he settled on a small smirk as he gazed at the girl beside him from the corner of his eye. His own pretty butterfly, tangled in a perfect web because he was tired of feeling alone.
But she wasn't struggling, and he didn't feel guilty.
