"You don't need me, Mulder. You never have. I've just held you back. I've got to go."

She wished the elevator would move faster. She didn't want to be near him; she had to leave. She could still see his hazel eyes staring at her, hurt, and she wished for nothing more than to be as far away from them as possible.

She hated that she was responsible for his pain but she didn't know what else to do. She was lost. And she wanted out.

Please make him follow me.

The doors of the elevator finally opened and she stared into the empty lobby; a life without him.

"Yes, Mom. It's the right thing to do. It just wasn't...me anymore. I thought that was what my life was but I want...need more. Okay? I don't know what else to say about it. It's done", she said, justifying her decision to her mother, to herself.

"Whatever you think is right Dana. I'm here if you need me".

Scully placed the phone back into the receiver and sat down onto the couch. She felt exhausted, drained, and she had no idea what to do next. It had been a long time since she had been this...free. Nowhere to go, nothing to do, no...one to see.

She looked around her living room, watching the shadows of the trees moving against her walls, and felt empty. Taking her time, she slowly rose from the couch and began to move around her apartment, taking in each of the details that she had failed to notice in the whirlwind that had been her life over the past six years. She stopped in front of her door, remembering painfully the intruders who had breached her zone of security, pushing their way into her life, her dreams.

She moved to the kitchen, pacing towards the counter. She turned, looking towards the entirety of her apartment and knew that it had to change. It had to be different because, she promised herself, she was going to be different. She wasn't sure yet how but she knew she would get there.
