Faces

She doesn't remember faces any longer. It was shock when she realized that she had forgotten Will's face. She forgot it from the edges inwards, first his hair, then his chin and forehead, then his lips, and last of all, his eyes.

She thought of everyone she had met on her adventures. Barbossa, Gibbs, Marty, Sao-Feng… All of their faces had been wiped out of her memory, as if they had never been.

She forgot her father's face, forgot it from the middle outwards, first his eyes, that always seemed to say so little, and last of all his wig. She remembered that absurd wig from a long time, then one day, she asked herself, What did it look like? And found that she could not answer that.

Soon she discovered that she did not even remember her own face. It had been such a long time since she had looked in the mirror, that she had no idea what she looked like. Were her eyes blue or brown? Was her face pale or not? What did she look like?

And so only names remained in her memory, no faces. Names connected vaguely with half-remembered and meaningless events.

But there was one face that she did remember. A sun-tanned face with black, kohl-rimmed eyes, and half-full, irresistible lips.

There was one face that she did remember.
