Swirling

The Doctor saw it all. The universe. Swirling around in a vast void. Vulnerable. In need of a defender.

Him.

The emotions swirled around him too, anger turning into blind rage in only a few moments. Sadness and regret cutting into him like a knife. And all the while he helped people.

Because that's what he did, help.

He sighed, staring out into space, remembering.

"I'm the Doctor by the way, what's your name?"

"Rose."

"Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!"

And later...

"All that is... all that was... all that ever could be."

"That's what I see. All the time. And doesn't it drive you mad?"

And then he'd regenerated. So, he knew what it was like to die. Once again things seem to swirl, the universe seems to be based on the swirl, and darkness closes in. Always. Pain is forgone by then, useless.

He'd been treated to that too, the pain. Tortured until near death.

He'd been there for the final shout as his planet burst, leaving him alone. Freed from his once constant burden but alone.

"How did it feel?"

The Master's words haunted him. He was always described as the Destroyer, the ultimate bringer of death and destruction. How had that happened? Even through nine-hundred years, time flew. How had that happened? How had the tides turned on Time's Champion?

Why?

That question haunted the worst. Why had things ended up like this? Where was his happily ever after?

"And I suppose... if it's one last chance to say it... Rose Tyler--"

But he'd gotten cut off. Time hated him. It swirled in it's domain, trying to hurt him. Always him.

'Pick on somebody else!' He pleaded silently.

"Doctor?"

The voice pierced his thoughts.

He looked up to Donna, trying not show any emotion. If he did, he would have started crying.

She stared at him, concerned. "Are you alright?"

"I'm always alright."

A/N: This just came to me. It's not that I was bored or anything. My first really sort of serious fic. Please no flames.
