Prologue

"Miss Jones?" The nurse called her as she read off the list of patients, her bright pink scrubs looking completely out of place for the gloomy waiting room.

Young girls around her holding tissues with teary eyes and some secluded to themselves as they looked off into the distance. Most likely contemplating the decisions that got them into the clinic they were in.

"Miss Jones, Dr. Ross is ready to see you." The plump nurse in the bright scrubs said again, her voice slightly high pitched and impatient this time around. Mercedes nodded her head, but she couldn't move her feet. It was as if her body was completely frozen with nerves and her heart all of a sudden felt as if it had dropped to the pit of her stomach.

She never thought she'd be in the predicament she was in now. She never thought she'd be considering something she was so against. But he left her no choice.

She closed her eyes and saw a little boy with sandy brown curls and bright green eyes. His dimpled cheeks were plump and rosy as he looked up at her. Unconditional love in his bright eyes, a love that she'd get from no one else.

"What am I doing?" She whispered brokenly to herself as she gripped her big purse in her lap tightly and shook her head slightly from side to side causing her messy bun to become even looser on her head.

"Miss Jones, are you going to go through with the procedure?" She woman's annoyed face softened at Mercedes conflicted look. She shifted the clip board in against her chest while her sneaker covered feet gently padded against the shiny tile floors.

Mercedes looked up to the woman, rubbing her damp cheek before shaking her head. "No, this was a mistake." She said quickly while rising up, her legs finally moving. The woman nodded understandingly before proceeding to call upon the next young woman and Mercedes was out of the door before she could hear the girl's name.

Her phone vibrated in her back pocket while she walked out of the clinic, the cold air bringing her back to reality. She pulled the device from her pocket with shaky fingers, not bothering to look at the screen before answering it.

"Hello?" She said slightly shaky as she clutched her sweater tighter against her chest.

"Mercy.."

She froze after hearing the voice in the phone. It was deep, groggy with a southern lit that she'd know anywhere. The voice she used to love to hear every night before she'd fall asleep. The voice she loved to hear when she woke up in the morning. The voice of the man she loved and hated at the exact same time.

"Mercy, baby I know you're there.." He said again with a small arrogant tone present in his voice.

Her mouth moved to form words, but nothing came out. What was she to say? She'd been avoiding him for two months. What was she to say to him? 'Hey, thanks for fucking me both physically and mentally! Oh, by the way, I'm having your kid. Would that suffice? She didn't think so.
