ROSE POV
"So that's little Scorpius," my father muttered under his breath, "Make sure you beat him in every test, Rosie. Thank God you inherited your mother's brains." I rolled my eyes at this slightly amused.
"Ron, for heaven's sake," my mum said half stern, half amused, "Don't try to turn them against each other before they've even started school."
"You're right, sorry," he replied, but just had to add, "Don't get too friendly with him, though, Rosie. Granddad Weasley would never forgive you if you married a pureblood."
Rather shocked and indignant, I was just about to say something when James ran over and shouted, "Hey!" After catching his breath he continued, "Teddy's back there, just seen him! And guess what he's doing? Snogging Victoire!"
At this I rolled my eyes knowing exactly where this was going. I muttered a good-bye to my mum, dad and Hugo and went to go find a compartment on the train.
After I had found an empty compartment, I waved out the window at Aunt Ginny as Uncle Harry knelt down to say something to Albus.
A few minutes later Al joined me in the compartment, "Why are they all staring?" demanded Al, looking around at all the others on the platform. "Don't let it worry you. It's me. I'm extremely famous." Dad said. I laughed, along with Albus, Lily and Hugo.
The train began to move and students and parents began shouting last minute good-byes. Once my parents, Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny were out of sight I sat back down and took out a textbook to review. So of course Albus just had to comment: "Are you really studying already, Rose? We haven't even gotten to school yet!"
I just glared at him, "Yes Albus, I actually want to pass our first year."
He sighed, "So do I Rosie, but you don't see me studying the second we pull away from the station, now do you."
I just roll my eyes at this and turn back to my textbook, only to be interrupted a moment later when the compartment door opened. I look up and see none other than Scorpius Malfoy.
"Do you mind if I sit here?" He asks, "Everywhere else is full."
I attempt to telepathically communicate to Al that he should tell Malfoy to get lost, but apparently telepathy is a skill I lack because he didn't get the message and replied "Sure thing, as long as you can tolerate Rosie here studying. I don't thing she can bear to be separated from her precious textbooks for more that a few minutes. She'll most likely be quizzing us within the hour."
As Scorpius slides into a seat he raises an eyebrow and gives me a look like he's never seen anything so strange.
I roll my eyes, once again, and explain, "He's exaggerating, but I can if you really want me to."
Still giving me that strange look, he just said, "No, I'm good, thanks."
After this, Al and Scorpius start talking about Quidditch and I just tuned them out and went back to my book, at least until it was ripped out of my hands by Albus.
"HEY! Give that back Albus!" I shouted.
"Nope," he said, holding the book out of my reach, "You're going to stop reading and socialize like a normal person."
Just as I was about to protest the snack trolley came by and I bought all the sugar I would need for what I anticipated to be a very long train ride.
For about an hour we ate and I was surprised to find I was actually enjoying myself. After a while though, I just wanted to go back to reading and asked Albus, quite nicely, "Al, could I have my book back, please?"
When he said no I decided that being nice would get me no where and tried to grab it. Unfortunately, I am short and Al is tall, so he was able to easily keep it out of my reach.
"Al, give it back." I said, jumping to try to reach it. Rather unexpectedly, Scorpius reached up and grabbed the book and handed it back to me.
"Hey!" Al exclaimed, "I thought you were on my side!" Scorpius just shrugged.
Well maybe he's tolerable, I think to myself, but another strange look from both him and Al makes me ask, "Did I just say that out loud?"
They both just nod, still giving me the strange look.
SCORPIUS POV
Well, I'm not quite sure how to take this. I mean, if she just now is realizing that I'm 'tolerable', then what was I before? I wasn't trying to be unpleasant. Now, I suppose I did just sit there while Albus took her book but overall I didn't think I gave her a reason to dislike me. Then again, I'm not sure if I really want her to like me. Oh well, I'll just forget about it, at least for now. Rose Weasley is a very strange person.
"SCORPIUS!" Albus shouts as he hits me with a book. That's when I realize he has been trying to get my attention for several minutes. "Hey! That hurt!" I shout back while glaring at him. I look up and see Rose trying hard not to smile but failing rather miserably. "Did you want something or did you just feel like hitting me with a book for no particular reason?" I ask Albus somewhat irritably. "You were just staring off into space with a really weird expression on your face and we're getting close, we should go change." he replies.
We kicked Rose out of the compartment to get changed and when she came back about 10 minutes later she had two other girls with her.
"Hey guys, this is Maddy and Amy May. They are two of a set of triplets, their brother Emmanuel is sitting a few compartments down. They will be sitting with us for the remainder of the ride." She said while giving us a look that clearly said 'unless you want to be hexed you will agree'.
"Sure thing." Albus says, much too engrossed in his chocolate frogs to care.
A short while later, an older boy walked in, I would guess that he was in third year. He said hello to Rose and Albus then look at me. He started talking to Rose and Al (I found out that his name is Matthew Erwin) and I wasn't really listening until I heard him start talking about my family.
"I see you're hanging out with a Malfoy, the scum of the wizarding world. Always buying their way out of everything, never doing anything honestly." By this point he had turned to me and was glaring.
Before I knew what I was doing I was on my feet. "Care to say that to my face?" He stands up too and says "I would but I'd rather not waste my breath on an arse like you." Everyone in the compartment is just watching us. We both reach for our wands, even though I know it's the stupidest thing ever, when the unexpected happens: Rose stands up.
"Hey Erwin, how about you go bother someone of your own intelligence, like maybe a bucket of flobberworms." After about a minute he turns away and walks out, but just before he leaves he turns and says, "I can't believe you defended him Rose." And before anyone could reply, he was gone.
The girls start talking and Albus is concentrating on his chocolate frogs, so I pull out a book and start reading, but before long an idea forms in my mind that could be great or could be disastrous. I decide to hope for the best and two seconds later Albus gets a cauldron cake smashed in his face.
"What was that for?!" he shouts at me.
"Payback," I answer simply, "I'm too nice to hit you with a book."
"Because this is soo much better." he answers, just before stuffing one back in my face.
Oh, you're gonna get it now," I say, and we both start throwing food at each other. Of course, before long, Rose gets hit and shouts, "Ok, you two are going down," before joining in herself. After a while, Albus decided to 'be a good person and make sure no one was left out of the fun' and threw a melting chocolate frog at Amy. Both her and Maddy joined in.
Once all five of us were thoroughly covered in sweets, Albus' brother James opened the compartment door. He took one look at us, his eyes got wide and he ran out. When he was gone, we all looked at each other and burst out laughing. After we get control of ourselves, we decide that we should probably start getting cleaned up. We had barely started when Rose and Al's cousin, Dominique came in and just raised an eyebrow, trying to look stern while obviously concealing a grin. "James told me there was a battle to the death going on here." "It was just a harmless food fight." Rose protested. Dominique raised a hand and said, "I figured you would need some help cleaning up."
With Dominique's help cleaning up was really easy. Just before leaving she looked over her shoulder and said, "We should be there in about 5 minutes."
Just as Dominique said, within five minutes we were all getting off the train. "Firs' years, firs' years over here." Hagrid shouted. He leads us to the lake and Rose, Al and I all pile into a boat together.
We round a bend and everyone gasps as we get our first glimpse of Hogwarts Castle.
