a/n: I'm still not 100% about writing these characters but lots of people want to know how Patsy and Delia first started dating so I thought I'd give it a shot, set before series four. Total references to the 4x06 conversation about dancing.
Patsy felt like a fool, an utter, lovesick fool, who had been in absolute despair for months. She'd had the conversation with herself a million times, and not just in the recent months, about how she ought not to fall in love with anyone, especially not another woman. Patsy could never be with someone, it was too risky, the world would never agree with it. It had never happened and it never could. It hadn't stopped her falling for Delia though, in fact, it hadn't even managed to stop her falling embarrassingly, head over heels in love pretty much the moment they had met. Then again, she wasn't too surprised – Delia was brave, funny and had pretty much teased Patsy since she first arrived. Briskly and bold Patsy, who was always considered a rather fearsome being, pretty much turned to mush around the smaller welsh nurse. It certainly didn't help that they were roommates, or that Patsy always found herself alone in a room with her. Sometimes she thought that Delia might be able to hear her heart about to pound out of her chest in the silence but that was just silly. They were close but she couldn't let the woman find out about her feelings, it being embarrassing would be the least of her worries.
They'd been dancing and drinking with the over nurses that night, and Patsy had fun, even if she wasn't particular close with any of them. She'd spent a lot of time laughing with Delia or fumbling over her words because of her. They'd both be asked to dance by a few men and the atmosphere in general had been joyous and light. It all ended rather pleasantly too but now it was just the two of them, in their room… in that silence. She couldn't explain it but it was an odd type of silence. Delia was still milling about, still in her clothes but free from her shoes and her tight hairstyle, somewhere near her bed and Patsy was sat on her own, facing away from Delia, her high heels discarded nearby.
"I'm disappointed I didn't get to dance with you tonight."
Patsy looked at Delia over her shoulder inquisitively, trying to figure out if she'd imagined Delia saying those words or not. It was always impossible to tell, the brunette always had a small smirk on her face and an unreadable look. Sometimes she felt a little frustrated by it. Patsy turned back, shook her hair loose and decided she had imagined it, that she ought to get over her silly crush because it would never be a good idea. Patsy was certain about her reasoning until Delia was at the side of her bed, looking at Patsy expectantly. She held out her hand to Patsy, raised eyebrows and an eager smile. Patsy took her hand careful, standing up and facing Delia, who pulled their bodies closely together with an arm around Patsy's waist.
"I know there isn't any music but-"
"There can be, in our heads." Patsy smiled, swaying with Delia gently. She was comfortable with the thought of dancing with the brunette very quickly, becoming relaxed in their position. They moved around the room slowly, bodies pressed against each other securely until there was a shift in the room's atmosphere and the two bodies became still. They were staring at each other in the silence, all movement seemingly gone from the world. Delia inched closer to Patsy in the stillness, separating their hands to cup her face gently. It felt like every moment had been building up to those few seconds. Patsy swallowed dryly before she felt Delia's lips against her own. She was still thinking about how soft they were and how they made her heart race when Delia pulled away, Patsy having not yet reacted to the surprise kiss. Her own astonished eyes met with Delia's wide, round, scared looking eyes. She's never seen Delia look so afraid, she was always so courageous and sure of herself. She was certainly far from that now; Patsy had never even thought that Delia could look such a way.
Seconds passed by like hours, then Delia went to move away, attempting to mumble some sentence that excused her behaviour but Patsy couldn't let her go, not without knowing it was requited. She pulled Delia back against her with force, kissing her hard until she felt the brunette relax in her arms. She didn't want to stop kissing her. Ever. Patsy simply couldn't stop. Delia rested her back against the nearest wall and brought Patsy's face down closer to hers, both hands lost in her hair. There wasn't anything to soft about it, it was passionate and strong, and clearly something they had both waited a very long time for. When they eventually broke apart, they were a mess of heaving chests, both of them trying to keep their desperate attempts at trying to catch their breath quiet, if not silent, to anyone outside of the paper thin walls. They still started at each other with eyes of surprise but this time they smiled, Delia even chuckled to herself a little. Eventually straightening herself up, Delia smirked at Patsy with a glint in her eye.
"I think we will do lots of dancing from now on."
Then, almost as soon as it felt it had happened, Delia left a grinning Patsy in the room. She walked out with such strut that Patsy found herself somehow more besotted, flopping against her bed the moment the door was closed. She then realized Delia had probably left to do the same thing in private too. There were problems, of course, hurdles they'd have to deal with but in that moment, she wasn't really thinking about anything else.
