Chapter 1

Ally was late for her date with James. They were going to the river for a romantic afternoon that included playing Frisbee, eating a romantic lunch, and lying in the sun together. And you can't forget getting in the cool water since it was going to be a scorching 100 degrees today. Ally couldn't wait to go have a day to herself of just fun, to escape the pressures of high school exams, and get out of the house since it had been raining for 3 days straight.

Just as Ally was going out the door, her mom called her.

" Ally, I just got called into work to take another shift. Could you take Savanna with you for me?" Ally's mom asked.

It figured. Her mom worked at the hospital and was always taking extra shifts. But that didn't stop her from complaining. " Mom, you know this is a special day for me! Why can't you take her?"

" Ally, you know perfectly well that I can't take her to work. I'm just asking you this once. Please, will you just take her with you?" Ally's mom said.

" It doesn't look like I have much of a choice," Ally grumbled under her breath. Then she yelled," SAVANNA YOU BETTER BE DOWN HERE IN 5 SECONDS!"

"Coming," said Savanna. She ran down the stairs as fast as her six year old legs could carry her. She had on a pretty white and yellow dress with a pink bathing suit on under it and her blonde hair in two pig tails. She carried a basket full of things down with her and bounced over to her sister. Ally couldn't help thinking how cute her sister was.

" Are you ready to go?" Ally asked a little lighter.

" Yep!" replied Savanna in that peppy six year old kind of voice. " Can we go now?" she asked.

" Now hold on," Ally's mom said. " Do you promise to do everything your sister says?"

" I promise," said Savanna. Ally could tell she was trying to be very mature in front of mom. A six year old could only be so mature though. The thought made Ally smile.

" Ok then, you can go," Ally's mom said.

Savanna bounded off towards Ally's car. Ally could already tell this was going to be a long day. The thought filled her with dread as she walked to the car away from her house. Little did she know that that would be the last time she walked away from it for a very long while.
