Betrayal

She stood on the rail of the ship as it tossed its way to her new home. She knew her future well enough now. There was no backing away. She understood the real reasons she was there, she understood she had a duty, and she even understood this life was better for her then the one she'd planned out. But that didn't soften the sense of betrayal she was feeling. It didn't soften the blow of the words that had been announced in front of an entire court, without her knowledge before hand. Not even the look of horror in her father's eyes as the announcement was made softened it. He had known, but he'd forgotten she was sure. No one announced a betrothal unless the King agreed to it first. She understood that.
The ship was being hit harshly by waves. They were worried. She wasn't. They believed it to be an omen; her ladies were on their knees in prayer. She was on deck watching the storm toss them about. It didn't bother her. She didn't believe it was an omen. She stood on the bow of the ship, her eyes travelling the sky looking for anything else to condemn them. She saw only bad weather.
She could lie, send a letter home and claim the storm was a bad omen. But she knew she wouldn't, knew she couldn't. The path she was on was laid clearly in stone. If the gods had seen something wrong with it, they would have protested. Or maybe they wouldn't, maybe they would let her go through with everything and make her discover it was the wrong choice.
Still she stood on the bow of the ship, letting her eyes now follow the wave patterns. She could still feel the sting of betrayal even though she was distracted. It wasn't helping. She remembered being the beach at Pirate Swoop the first time she decided what her path was going to be. She remembered watching the waves, letting the sun soak into her skin and hair and remembered the innocent happiness it left her with. Now all that happiness and innocence was gone and it was left with hollowness and a sense of deceit.
As her gaze followed the horizon she resigned herself to her fate. Like it or not, she was going to be the next Empress of Carthak. And she had better don her best armor because the fight wasn't over yet.
A/N: I just figured there would be a sense of injustice in Kalasin if she was being sent to Carthak when she wanted to be a knight, and I figured deep down she might know it was for the best, that being a Knight wouldn't be a good future for her because while she could be one and maybe a good one, it would cause trouble for her family if they wanted her to marry or her sisters as was their future. That's just what I figured. I got the storm idea from Anne Boleyn because in all these books that I've read she was on the bow of the ship when a storm came. Or at least I think it was the bow….But yeah.
