Jet yawned. "I'm going out for a while." he said lightly, and jumped out of the loft. He padded out the back door of the barn, which really wasn't a door at all. It was a big hole against the side of the loft. He slipped out of it, lean black body hovering for a moment before it disappeared into the evening outside. He turned around and looked at the back side of the barn. A long plank leaned against it. He climbed up it and jumped onto the ridgepole of the roof. He shook his pelt, long, coal black fur drifting lightly in the wind. He sat down and looked up at the rising moon, sighing softly.

He sighed and closed his eyes as a gentle breeze stirred his fur. He bit his lip. "Flutter." he whispered.

*****FLASHBACK*******

Jet was sitting on a hill, looking at the sky and enjoying the breeze at near twilight. He was only a year old old, living with a band of rogues who had adopted him when he was young. A pale tabby she cat came up the hill, her green eyes gleaming. "Coal." she purred, a smile on her face. Jet looked at her, his eyes lighting up. "Flutter!" She picked up her pace and after what seemed like ages she sat down next to Jet on the grass. He turned to face her, gazing at her beautiful, narrow face. She wasn't like the others, not like any of his friends. She pawed absently at a piece of grass for a moment, and then turned to find herself in his eyes. He grinned and in a flash they were leaping about on the hill, chasing each other and laughing. After some time of frolicking they collapsed on the grass, still giggling.
They were silent for a moment, and then Jet raised his paw in the air, black and sillhoueted against the dim sky. Flutter studied the paw for a moment, then lifted her own. It was bright, silvery gray in contrast with the darker sky. Jet twisted his head to study her face, and she mirrored his movements. "We look silly-" she giggled, but it was cut short as Jet leaned forward and kissed her gently. "Shhhh." he wispered, drawing away. "I love you, Flutter."

Tears streamed down Jet's black face, barely visible.

*FLASHBACK*

Jet awoke to loud yowling and screaming of battle and pain. He jumped out of his nest of moss that was in the corner of the old twoleg shack that they lived in. He raced outside to see foxes. Three huge foxes. The small band of five cats was no match. Jet launched himself at the biggest one, raking its side. It lunged at him and slung him to the ground. He recovered and jumped back up. Then he saw her. She was lying in a pool of blood at the base of a tree. "Flutter!" he shrieked, racing toward her. He knelt at her side, thankful for the protection of the bramble bushes nearby. The pale tabby looked up at him, her green eyes glistening with love and pain. "I..will..always love...you..Coal. Always." she murmured, the light fading in her eyes. Suddenly he realized that the screams of battle had silenced. He didn't want to look around. His whole world was this small space between tree and bramble. "Flutter?' he squeaked, his lean black body trembling violently. Flutter lifted her head to touch Jet's, which wasn't very far. He breathed in her sweet scent, but it was choked off with death snd blood. "Goodnight, Coal." she sighed, her head falling into his paw. "Flutter?" Jet whispered, his head falling forward to rest on her chest. Hours later.
Jet had already buried Flutter. His heart was broken. He turned around and looked at the clearing and gasped. Every cat was dead. He didn't really care anymore. The only one he could think about was Flutter.
He ran off into the mountains.

Jet buried his head in his paws. "Goodnight."
