"Anna... can I...ummm..." Elsa's voice died out in her throat. Damn it, why am I so nervous? It's just Anna. I shouldn't be nervous to talk to Anna. But she was. She could feel her face flushing, her heart racing so much she was sure that it was louder than her voice.
Anna, oblivious to the internal struggle of Elsa's mind, skipped over, dusting dirt off her hands. She had been helping the gardeners again. In Elsa's mind she was spring incarnate. A beautiful goddess of budding plants and baby ducklings.
"What's up?" Anna asked. She had a smudge of dirt on her nose and a broad smile was making her whole face shine.
Okay, Elsa said to herself, time to say it. They had talked about this before. Elsa loved Anna. Anna loved Elsa. They both knew it. They had both thought – really, where's the harm? But they hadn't done anything more than smile shyly at each other and occasionally hold hands when no one was looking.
But, if they were supposed to be together, shouldn't they have done more. Elsa fantasized about it - about kissing Anna. About holding her close and caressing her. But she was beginning to doubt that they had ever even had that conversation. Maybe Elsa had imagined the whole thing, or misunderstood – suddenly, a delicate hand was waving infront of her face.
"Helloooo, Arendell to Elsa." Elsa blinked and focused on Anna's face. Anna raised an eyebrow. "You wanted something?"
Elsa gave a tiny cough. She had to say something.
She drew herself up. If she could manage meetings with foreign dignitaries, she could talk to Anna.
"Anna, I wanted to disscuss our previous arrangement and clarify a few points that have been puzzling me."
Shit, why was she talking like Queen Elsa? But now that she had started talking, she couldn't stop.
"We have discussed our mutual affection for each other and how this affection is more than simple sisterly love. Now, certain points of our relationship have changed since that discussion but-"
Anna started giggling. She clapped her hands to her mouth, trying to stiffle the laughter. Any confidence Elsa had had deflated like a balloon.
"I mean... it's just..." She looked down. She started twisting her hands together. Anna stopped giggling. It was now or never. "Are we... a thing?
Oh, god. She had said that in the stupidest way possible. Anna was going to laugh again. How could Elsa, the queen of Arendell, sound like a school-girl.
"Ummm... nevermind," she said hurriedly. She was going to run away and lock herself in her room again. She was obviously too stupid for normal human interaction.
"Oh, Elsa," Anna said, understanding lighting her face. She grabbed Elsa's hand, preventing her from running away. "Yes, we're a thing."
"Then why haven't we kissed, or anything?" Gosh, now her voice was trembling. And she sounded like a petulant child.
"I..." Anna sounded completely shocked. Elsa looked back to her face. She was as red as a beet. "I was waiting for you. I mean – you're so cool and everything and I was worried that if I just went and did what I wanted you'd think I was being pushy or just too clingy. I didn't want you to think I was being clingy. I am always clingy. Like when we were younger and I kept knocking on your door all the time and-"
Elsa held up a hand, cutting off Anna mid ramble.
"You were waiting for me?"
Anna nodded.
She laughed. God, she was stupid. Anna grinned.
"So..." Anna said slowly, "do you want to kiss?"
"Yes."
They shared a shy smile. Elsa leaned forward. So did Anna.
SMACK.
"Owww..." Their foreheads had smacked together. Anna was clutching at her forehead.
"Oops," she said.
Elsa laughed. "How about I kiss you, to start with?" Anna nodded.
Elsa kissed her. And then, because she enjoyed it so much, she did it again.
