Fireflies

"…Fireflies." She whispered, her voice so low that he almost didn't hear.
"What?" He asked, turning his head to look at her.
She lifted her arm, bringing his arm up as well since their fingers were intertwined, and motioned towards the sky. "The fireflies… There's so many of them out tonight."
He smiled a bit, not anywhere as near as impressed as she was about them. "I guess I hadn't noticed them."
She lowered their arms down again, then curled her body closer to his before asking her next question.
"Do you think they're fireflies?"
"Who?"
"Everyone we've ever known who has died."
"Where'd you get an idea like that?"
"I think Rachel mentioned it last time we spoke."
"Oh, right…" He closed his eyes for a moment, seemingly giving the matter some thought, which in itself could be considered unusual for him. "I guess they could be fireflies… I never really thought about it before…"
She laughed quietly, as though if she were too loud, it would shatter the moment. "Well, I hope I can become a firefly when I die."
"Whoa, what?" He turned to look at her once more, even though he had to pull away from her slightly to do so. "What are you talking about? Mercedes, you're not-"
"Now, hold on a minute." She interrupted him before he could continue, "I'm not saying I'm going to run off and get myself killed, or anything. I'm just saying, that… you know, when that time comes and I do die… I think I'd like to become a firefly."
Her answer seemed to reassure him, and he settled down once more. "Oh. Well, I… I guess it wouldn't be too bad. Hell, there are worse things out there, I suppose."
She smiled to herself and nodded once in agreement, before finally settling her head against his chest. 'When I die, I'll come back as a firefly so I can watch over you, Sam.'

AN: This was really short but. I have this head cannon with these two that Sam being the outdoorsy person that he is, takes Mercedes on random nature hikes that always led to their 'special spot' where they stargaze and just talk and spend time with each other away from the stresses of Glee and home life.
