Eggplant

Caitlyn knocked on the door, admiring the flowers Mrs. Black has planted in the front yard. She had come over to visit Nate, her amazing boyfriend. She smiled as she heard Nate's 'coming!' from inside.

"Hey there, Cait." He smiled at her. "I thought you were coming later..."

"Oh, I see how it is now. Don't want me here now, do you?" She raised an eyebrow at him, but he simply laughed.

"You know I love your company more than anything else in the world."

"Anyways, I was coming later, but my mom got tired of all my excitement around the house and kicked me out." She winked at him and spread her arms out. "So here I am? Excited to see me?"

"Of course." He opened the door wider and let her in.

"Do you have any food? I'm starving." As if to prove her point, she imitated her stomach rumbling from hunger.

"Did you not eat breakfast?" He looked at her incredulously. She always ate breakfast, that girl just needed breakfast to survive.

"I did... I'm just hungry. Do you have food or not?"

"I think there's some food in the kitchen..."

"Yes, because where else would you put food?" Caitlyn glared at Nate for such an answer, but he didn't answer.

Caitlyn walked into the kitchen and began pulling open cupboards. She'd been in the house a number of times, it was practically a second home to her now. She continued rummaging, until she saw, the eggplant.

"Why do you have an eggplant?"

"I... don't know. We just do." Caitlyn shrugged and picked up the eggplant.

"You hungry there, Fred?" She ran a finger down its side.

"Fred?"

"Yes. Fred, the eggplant."

"Fred. The eggplant." Nate drawled out the syllables slowly. "Really?"

"YES! This is Fred. He is the most insanely, awesomest, greatest, bestest, purplest eggplant to have ever lived!"

"Caitlyn. It's an eggplant."

"So? EGGPLANTS WILL RULE THE WORLD!"

"No one likes eggplants, Caitlyn."

"THEN THEY WILL LEARN TO! Right, Fred?" Caitlyn looked at Fred thoughtfully, seemingly listening to his answer.

"What are you doing?" Nate asked in response to Caitlyn's 'mmm's and 'ahh's.

"SHUSH! Fred is speaking." She hugged Fred to her chest and nodded. "Yes, I agree Fred. Nate is very stupid to not understand that basics of eggplant speech."

"Seriously?" Caitlyn nodded her head vigorously in response. Nate threw up his hands in forfeit. "I thought you came here to help with my music."

"I did, until I saw Fred. Let's face it, Nate, Fred is so much better." Nate rolled his eyes as Caitlyn turned back to Fred to continue her listening-to-what-Fred-was-saying look.

"Alright, what's Fred saying now?"

"Fred is saying that you should go work on your music yourself while I play with Fred." Nate grumbled and stalked away, muttering about how his own girlfriend didn't even care about him enough to ignore an eggplant.

"Oh, Nate! How could you even think such a thing? As awesome as Fred is in my heart, I love you more." Nate ignored her and continued to walk away, even with a smile now adorning his face.
