Simpler Times

Life was so much easier when your clothes didn't match and boys had cooties

Their dorm-mates may have been keeping company with the stars, but Lily Evans and her right hand, Alice had other plans.

The large, illuminated wall clock chimed twelve times - signaling the arrival of midnight and the beginnings of a ritual that would carry on for years.

Lily Evans stared at the clock, counting the seconds and as it chimed those twelve little rings, she jumped out of bed.

Glancing at the clock once more, Lily hurried to her trunk and pulled out a deck of cards, trying her darndest to be as quiet as possible.

She shuffled them once, suck her left hand in the air, waved it around, and then placed her fingers on her palm.

Across the room, Alice took notice of the odd hand gesture and crept out of bed. After checking to make sure she had not waken any of the other students, she raced over to were Lily was sitting.

"Poker?" She asked in a whisper, taking her place next to Lily on the stone floor.

"Nope. Poker was last wednesday, tonight I name the game."

"But, Lils, I love Poker." Alice had been deprived as a child - belonging to a wizarding family she had never known the joys of the game. That is until she met Lily and discovered her passion in life.

"Yes, and although that is all well and good, I've got an itching to play spit." Her reason? Alice was horrid at spit. And after losing ten rounds of poker last week, Lily was in need of an ego booster.

Alice rolled her eyes, instantly recognizing Lily's motives. Two can play that game, Lils. "Fine by me, but I name gossip subject."

"And that is?"

"Potter. And you deal."

Grumbling, Lily started the deal - two five decks, two cards in the middle, then half for Alice and half for her. "Why Potter?"

Alice hastily grabbed her half and drew five "I've noticed you've become rather indifferent to the prat." Five of Diamonds, Six of Clubs, Three of Spades, King of Spades, and Ace of Diamonds.

"Indifferent?"Lily glanced at her own cards Jack of Clubs, Six of Spades, Two of Diamonds, Ace of Spades, and Seven of Clubs. "You mean, I don't loathe every fiber of his being?"

"Potato, Potatoe . Same thing." The game was starting, and conversation had turned meaningless. In a flurry of cards and hands, the minutes flew by.

"Can you go?" Surveying her cards, Lily turned to Alice.

"No. How about you?" Alice shrugged. "I've got nothing."

"Draw?" The girls took the first of the two five piles, preparing to turn the cards and re-start the game.

"Alice, " Lily murmured, turning the card over and reading the front King of Spades "Its just ... complicated. It was simpler when he had cooties."

Nodding, her best friend drew her card "Good point. So what's the plan?"

Preparing to dive headfirst into another flurry of cards, Lily placed her card in the middle. "I dunno - what should I do?"

Alice tossed her card into the middle, looking from the two cards to Lily, chuckling.

"Well, Lily. I do believe the cards tell all, in this case at least."

There, strewn on the floor, were the two cards...
