Kurt tossed the box of candy onto his bed as he loosened up his tie. This night, however fun it had been, was exhausting. He was so ready to just get through his skincare routine so that he could get to bed. He glanced at his phone, knowing that Blaine was going to call any minute.
Blaine.
He had expected to see Blaine there tonight. Of course he had. He thought he was meeting Blaine there. Not Dave. He looked back at the candy, chewing on his bottom lip. He hadn't been too cruel, had he? And what would happen with that kid at the Sugar Shack? The one who had apparently known Dave. He hoped the kid had enough sense to keep his mouth shut about whatever ideas he was coming up with about Dave. Kurt had seen what outing did to a person, and he wouldn't wish it on anyone. Not even Dave. Especially not Dave.
His phone rang, and he reached for it as he was wriggling out of his jeans. Blaine. He set it back down, tugging his jeans off and laying them on a nearby chair. It wasn't that he didn't want to talk to Blaine. It was just that he had so much on his mind, and he didn't think he'd make good conversation.
He silenced his phone after getting into his pajamas. He'd just tell Blaine that he passed out. He worked through his skincare routine as fast as he could, not rushing -as that would do him no good - but quick enough that he could settle down into bed soon. He picked up the box of candy, running his fingers over the top of the box before opening it up.
"The butterscotch are my favorite."
Kurt ran his fingers over the candy, wishing he didn't remember how hurt Dave had seemed. How could Dave ever think that he loved Kurt? After everything… What did Dave expect out of today? Did he really think that Kurt would love him back? Was it possible that Kurt could love him back?
Kurt put the lid back on the candy, setting the box on his bedside table. He clicked his light off, settling down. He should have been asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He was tired enough.
But he couldn't stop thinking about David Karofsky and what he'd done. An entire week spent delivering candy and cards and wearing a gorilla suit so that he could personally deliver these things to Kurt. He never imagined that Dave would do anything like that. And he had tried to hold his hand. Dave Karofsky, who had transferred schools to keep his secret, who freaked out at the slightest mention of coming out… but David had touched his hand in a restaurant on Valentine's Day.
Maybe David did love him, but why? No one had ever loved him first.
