The early light of dawn peaked into the dusty windows of a near forgotten building in a quiet corner of London. Slowly waking, the owner of the building rose, trying not to wake the two charges he had gained the night before. But to no avail. With one glance, the man saw two pairs of brown eyes gazing at him with fear.
"Good morning, my little lambs," he said with a grin. "And 'ow did you sleep?"
One of the twins, a boy with an unusual birthmark, glared at him in silence. The man sighed. He had hoped the two would begin to trust him. After all, the thought of someone hurting these two horrified him.
It wasn't long before the silence was broken by the boy's sister, who seemed to be a bit braver than he.
"We managed to get some sleep, Mr. Undertaker," she replied with a tiny smile, ignoring the glare that came from her twin. "Thank you for letting us use your, um, home for the night.
The Undertaker smiled.
"That is nice to hear, m'dear." The silver haired man replied, patting the girl on the head. "Are you two hungry? I'll fix up something for you to eat."
He left before the twins could reply. As he was preparing breakfast, the Undertaker could hear the two children's whispers.
"Mabel, how could you talk to him?!" The young boy whispered. "How do we know we can trust him?"
"Dipper, stop being ridiculous." Mabel hissed back. "He did take us in when we needed help."
"I'm being ridiculous? Mabel, we don't even know this man!" Dipper retorted, his brown eyes hardening to hide his tears. "For all, we know he could be working with...
"Dipper, enough." Mabel snapped back, her own tears threatening to overflow.
Dipper was going to say more, but upon seeing the tears spilling down his twin's cheeks, the words dried up on his tongue.
"Mabel, I'm..."
But the boy never finished, as his own tears betrayed him. It was the the Undertaker came back into the room, carrying a tray of food.
"Now, now, what is this?" Undertaker asked, placing the tray down. "What has made you lambs so sad?"
Being the professional he was, the older gentleman reached for something for the twins to dry their eyes.
"There now," He said, helping both twins dry their tears. "If you want, tell me what has got the two of you so sad?"
To his surprise, it was Dipper who replied.
"We are so far from home and from our family." The boy replied quietly. "I don't know if we'll ever see them again."
Mabel nodded sadly. It hurt the Undertaker to know that ones as young as these two were so lost, so far from their home and timeline.
"Don't you worry now," he said with a small grin. "I will do my best to help you get back home."
Both twins looked at him with a mixture of emotions on their faces, unable to say a word.
"Now don't you worry none." The Undertaker added, wrapping his arms around the children in comfort. "I'll be here to help you. I promise."
With that the twins began their journey to find their way home, knowing that they had someone to catch them when they began to fall.
The End
