Candlelight filled the church, creating a soft, flickering warmth in the ancient stone building. Princess Allura knelt before the alter, head bowed and hands clasped, lips occasionally moving as she offered up her silent prayers.
From a nearby pew, her escort watched, seemingly mesmerized by the tranquility of it all. Not for the first time, Keith considered the strength of her faith; a faith that allowed for perseverance in even the darkest of times. The Princess of Arus had, time and again, lost so much, so many of those she loved and cared for, and yet she never wavered. She knew that what was righteous and good would win out over what was evil and wrong.
Coming here nearly once a week for the past two years, he had considered what gave her that conviction and he thought he had finally figured it out.
Allura's soul was filled with light. She was goodness, she embodied righteousness. They were all so very lucky to know her; he was so very lucky to know her. She gave him strength when he thought he had none left, hope when all seemed impossible. She believed in him when he didn't believe in himself, seeing a man who was worthy of all good things.
Her movement caught his attention; she crossed herself one last time before standing up and dusting off her knees. When she turned to face him, tears shimmered in her eyes, but she offered up a bright smile anyway.
"Are you ready to go home, Keith?"
"Whenever you are, Princess."
At her nod, he stood and hurried to the door, opening it and telling the guards waiting outside to bring their horses. Keith watched as she flipped her cloak around her shoulders before coming to wait with him. He felt a stirring deep in his heart, a feeling he'd felt many times before when she was near.
Someday soon he was going to have to tell her just how special she was.
