The characters of Steve McGarrett, Danny Williams, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua and Mary McGarrett do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.
The characters of Danielle 'Danni' Richardson, Caitlin 'Cait' Richardson and Lewis Carter do however belong to me so please do not use without first asking permission.
Any other character who might pop up who you don't instantly recognise will probably belong to me as well. I'll hopefully catch them in time to put above though.
Author notes
Welcome to 'The Big Island'
This is the official second story of the Model saga and technically occurs between chapter Twenty-two and twenty-three of Love at first sight'.
As you can guess from the title this story focuses on Steve and Danielle during the ten days where they disappear together on vacation and will tell you what they have been up to.
This story should end up being around about sixteen chapters once it's completed and I will be focusing on it until it's finished.
Please be assured that while my love of the show experiences has dispersed, my love of these characters and the A/U worlds I build around them has most definitely not dispersed and I shall continue to write these stories until my muse refused to work with me. My aim is very much not only to finish all my WIP but to also put up one shot stories and eventually the other chapter stories which are partially written but which have no yet been uploaded.
If you have not yet read up to Part Twenty-Two of 'Love at first sight' then I would strongly suggest you do as this story won't make sense without it.
Please enjoy.

Please keep in mind that I don't have a Beta for this story so the odd mistake may creep in without me meaning it to. I have also never been to Hawaii so all locations are either from the show, google or made up in my own mind.
Please note that the quote at the beginning of the stories are quotes I've found on google, these are not mine in any fashion.

Part one
Day One – Early morning
"Are you sure that you still want to do this Danni because if you've changed your mind since last night about us going away together like this then I would completely understand. If you have any doubts at all, then I can easily cancel the trip and we can just stay here together instead."
Danielle Richardson looked up from her task of scrutinising her belonging which she had just finished packing in her suitcase to see her boyfriend Steve McGarrett standing in the doorway of his bedroom, watching her with a concerned look as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, a simple action which she was sure that he was unaware that he was even doing it. She couldn't help the small smile which came to her face at what he was doing, it was such a small thing but it showed her that he was comfortable enough in her presence to be himself in front of her.
It was the first time that the two of them were going away together and she knew that Steve was feeling nervous about it though he was clearly trying to hide that small fact from her. She could hardly blame him for feeling that way considering that she was feeling just as nervous about it herself.
A slight part of her, thought that they were somewhat crazy to be doing this when their relationship with each other was so new, not even two weeks old, but if she was being honest with herself then she already felt as if she had known him for most of her life which was the reason why her answer had been yes when he had first suggested it to her, knowing instantly that he was right and that them doing this together was the right thing for them to do.
On top of that if the last few days had showed her anything it was the fact that if they wanted time alone together to have the chance to learn more about one another then their only option was to go somewhere quiet where they wouldn't be instantly recognisable or at least where Steve wouldn't be known at first glance.
"I haven't changed my mind about us going away together Steve." She assured him, her smile growing when his shoulders slumped down in relief as though her words had eased a burden from him. "What about you? Are you having seconds thought about it?" She couldn't help but ask him, a flicker of unease growing in her which dissipated when he immediately shook his head at her.
Definitely not Danni" He told her as he stepped forward into the room, moving around the bed and stopping when he was in front of where she was standing. He reached up, his large hand wrapping easily around the back of her neck as he used the grip to softly pull her into a sweet, lazy kiss, lingering for a second before he let her go and instead placed a kiss on her forehead. "If I kiss you again then we won't be leaving this bedroom anytime soon and we need to head off soon." He explained when she shot him a questioning look.
"Well my packing is pretty much done now" She commented, tilting her head to the side so she could give her suitcase one last glance as her mind ran through a mental checklist. "All that is left is to zip it up and bring it downstairs to the front door."
"I put mine by the door yesterday evening" Steve told her, leaning his cheek against the top of her head for a moment before he sighed and took a step back. "I'm going to check the house one last time and make sure that all the windows are closed and that everything which needs to be locked actually is. Meet me in the kitchen in five minutes okay?" He asked her, smiling and rewarding her with another kiss when she nodded at him. "Good." He added before he reluctantly let her out of his arms and left the room, a confident swagger to his step which Danielle couldn't help but laugh softly at before she turned her attention back to her task.
She couldn't think of anything else which she would need for the ten days they would be away, especially since she would no doubt be able to get anything which she did happen to forget from a local shop or a hotel if that was where they were staying. She actually had no idea even where they were going since Steve had decided to keep the location a secret from her.
Satisfied that she was as ready as she was going to be and aware of her time running out, Danielle leaned forward and zipped her small suitcase up and padlocking it before she picked it up and tested the weight, the same way she always did any time she packed. She gave one customary glance around the bedroom, taking a brief moment to smooth her hand over the duvet to straighten out any wrinkles before she left the room and made her way down the small hallway and down the staircase. She came to a stop by the door and placed her suitcase beside the backpack which she assumed was the bag Steve was bringing with him.
Glancing down at with a smile she shook her head and headed through the living room and the study and into the kitchen. She came to a stop in the doorway, her eyebrow rising when her gaze landed on Steve who was leaning over the kitchen table with a slight frown on his face, clearly writing something on the piece of paper on the surface.
"What are you doing?" She asked him curiously as she stepped fully into the room and moved towards him, wrapping her arms absently around his waist when she was next to him. She tilted her head to the side so her cheek was resting against his bicep as she looked down at the paper, her smile widening when she took in his handwriting. Somehow, she wasn't surprised to see that it had a bold slant to it.
"I'm going to leave a note here for Mary and Danno to let them know that we've gone away together. I can guarantee that one of them, if not both of them, will end up coming around here this morning for some reason and if they arrive and find out that we're not here and there is no note then they will probably panic and raise the alarm, or at least Danno certainly will and trust me when I say that the last thing we want is for my team to be on our tail." He said ruefully.
"Well since you're the one who knows what he is like, I'll simply take your word on that. I'm not too sure whether Mary will be around today though, she was in quite the state by the time I got her back to her place and through the front door and into her bed." Danni commented, sounding briefly amused as she continued to speak. "You know she spent a lot of last night telling me that I was the best thing to happen to you since forever."
"Well, she's not exactly wrong with that assessment Danni," Steve replied simply as he tilted his head towards her, flashing her a quick smile before he leaned his head down and kissed her, pulling back slightly so he could search her eyes for a moment. "I didn't get a chance to say this to you last night when you arrived home but thank you for making sure that Mary did get back to her place okay last night, I know that she can be a handful at times, especially when she's been hitting the cocktails and wine so I appreciate it." He said, a fond smile coming to his face as he thought briefly about his younger sister.
"It was no problem sweetheart" Danielle replied with a shrug of her shoulders at him. "I was happy to do it, besides she's your sister, I was always going to make sure that I dropped her off first in the taxi and made sure she got in okay. I know how important she is to you, plus she was no trouble once we left the bar and were in the taxi together."
"Still Danni, I can't think of many people who would have gone that far out of their way just to do something for me. It means a lot to me that you did that." He remarked, his brow furrowing as his eyes skirted away from hers for a moment. Danielle watched him carefully before she sighed quietly, wondering briefly about the demons which were clearly plaguing her other half, demons which she had no doubt had been caused by the people in his life.
She lifted her hand, cupping his face in her hand and used the hold to bring it back around to her, going up on her tiptoes and kissing him gently before she leaned back.
"I would do it again in a heartbeat so there's no need to mention it again." She told him before she looked back at the letter. "Is there anything else you want to add to it or are you happy that it says everything that you want it to say?" She remarked, nodding towards it to indicate what she meant.
"It finished unless you can think of anything else, we should add to it?" He commented as he picked the piece of paper up from the surface and held it out to her. She took a step away from him, reaching out and took the letter from it, briefly scanning it, her mouth quirking up into a small smile at what he had said before she handed it back to him.
"The only thing that I would add to it would be a P.S from me to Mary telling her that I had fun with her last night and that I would be happy to do it again though maybe next time she could come over here and I could dinner for us, you know that she told me that she has never had a roast dinner before. I know that technically we're in Hawaii and it's not something which is done here but not ever having one is just wrong on so many levels. I want to make us one just so she can experience it, Cait and I have them every time we're in Britain and they are amazing." She told him, sounding almost baffled as though the thought of never eating a roast dinner before was a foreign concept to her.
"Forget about making it for Mary, Danni, I wouldn't mind of those myself if you know how to do one. I don't think I've had one in years now I think about it." He remarked before continuing thoughtfully. "I think that the last time I actually had a Roast dinner was when I was a teenager with my Aunt and Uncle and they took us on holiday one year to England. While I remember, are you still happy to meet Danno's daughter Grace soon?" He asked her, smiling when she nodded at him.
"Of course," She agreed easily. "Just don't tell her that it will be soon, the last thing I want to do is build her hopes up only to have to let her down because we have to cancel due to lack of time so if you're asking because you're planning on adding a P.S about it then tell Danny that we'll arrange it for the next time I'm here in Hawaii. We'll only have four days when we return from this trip and those days will go quickly."
"Those four days are going to be for you and me to spend together." Steve agreed absently as he picked up the pen and added more to the letter. "Knowing Grace, the way I do, she'll be more than happy just knowing that she will get to meet you in the future and spend some quality time with you. You're going to love her when you meet her Danni, I might be biased but she really is a great kid. She's incredibly bright and smart not to mention kind. She's a credit to Danno and as much as I hate to admit it, to Rachel as well, they've done an amazing job raising her, especially considering their numerous issues with one another."
"I'm looking forward to meeting her in person. I sent my sister a text this morning to let her know that we're heading out on vacation today so I won't be available to see her for the next ten days. She hadn't replied yet so I'm assuming, given what time it is, that she is still asleep." She told him before she suddenly frowned at him. "Are you going to tell me at least where we are heading on our vacation or are you still expecting me to guess it?" She queried curiously, rolling her eyes at the cheeky look he shot her, a look which she was pretty sure was meant to be an innocent one and one which told her everything she needed to know. "Somehow I had a feeling that would be the answer." She said on a sigh as she shook her head.
"Good to know that your can read me so well, speaking of which we need to head out now." He told her, brushing a quick kiss against her cheek as he passed her and headed out the door, Danielle following a step behind him. They came to a stop by the front door, Danielle moving passed Steve and picking her suitcase up only to have it taken from her a moment later. "I've got the bags Danni" Steve stated, a warm tone to his voice which made her smile despite herself as he shouldered his own backpack.
"Are you sure because my suitcase isn't exactly heavy, I can easily carry it myself." She pointed out to him, tilting her head to one side as she watched him punch in the code for his alarm system.
"I know you can baby but I've got it this time." He assured her before he walked up to her, giving her a wink as he reached passed her and opened the front door, pulling his hand back and placing it on the small of her back as he ushered her out into the sunshine.
"And here I was thinking chivalry was dead" Danielle comment with a soft laugh as she shook her head again and stepped onto the garden path, her eyes glancing around her. It was still early morning, only just after six AM but already the sky above them was a bright blue colour which indicated that it would be another gorgeous day in Oahu. Although Steve had kept silent about where they were going, she had made the educated guess based on how much he had suggested she bought and that the small fact that she had spied him collecting her passport and placing it with his in his luggage, that they were heading over to one of the surrounding islands. She just wasn't sure which one he had chosen for them.
She headed down the pathway, veering towards her right to where the truck was parked and moved around the front of it so she was on the passenger side. She opened the door and climbed in, closing it behind her and wincing at the hot hair which had clearly built up overnight in the contained area. Danielle pulled on her seatbelt, leaning back in the seat and tilting her head to the side as Steve climbed in behind the wheel. She smiled softly when he grinned brightly at her before he threw the car into reverse and backed onto the empty road, taking the right which, she knew already would lead directly to the freeway.
"So, do you think that your teammates and your sister will be surprised that you've just upped and left for a vacation without telling any of them where you're actually going?" Danielle asked him, smiling when he reached out and took her hand in his, tugging at it until he could rest their joined hands on his thigh, his thumb gently stroking across her knuckles, the simple, almost absent action sending a pleasurable shiver down the length of her spine.
"God yes" Steve said on a laugh after a moment of consideration. "But they'll understand my reasons for leaving eventually. I just want you and I to be able to spend some uninterrupted time alone together and it's become pretty clear that we're not going to get that if we remain here. The guys and Mary are too curious about you and our relationship with each other to stay away regardless of how many times I tell them to. I suppose I can't blame them in a way, regardless of how frustrating it is." He remarked with a shake of his head.
"I think you're right when you say that you can't blame them for reacting the way they are but I don't think I'm the reason why they can't stay away. I think it's because it's you and because they care about you so much that they want to be sure that I'm not going to hurt you and break your heart. They want to be there for you and that makes them really good friends to have in your life. If they didn't care about you then they would be leaving us alone to get on with things." She pointed out quietly, meeting his eyes directly when he turned away from watching the road briefly to look at her.
"I'd never admit it out loud but I'm lucky to have them all in my life as well, they gave me purpose after my Dad died, but I'm also just as lucky now to have you in my life Danni." He commented, a serious tone to his voice as he looked back towards the traffic, bringing her hand up to his mouth and kissing the back of it. The small, loving action causing her heart to skip a beat, a sensation she was slowly growing use to experiencing when she was around him.
She had never had a romantic partner before who treated her with the same level of gentleness and respect which Steve did.
"Well that makes two of us who feels that way because I am just as lucky to have you in my life Steve." She responded with another smile before she turned to look out of the window, content to sit there quietly and simply watch the scenery race by them while Steve continued to hold her hand. It was nice to be in someone's company and not feel the need to break the silence with small talk. She had lost track of how many times, especially over the past few years of her life, when she had longed for this very thing.
Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully as her gaze snagged on a road sign, the sight making her sit up straight in her chair.
"What is it Babe?" Steve asked her, clearly noticing the sudden change in her posture. She turned to him, giving him a long look before she spoke.
"Are we on our way to the airport?" She quired, returning the grin he shot her.
"Well perhaps we are Danni or perhaps we're not, who knows for sure." He replied, drawing out the last word, clearly enjoying keeping her in suspense. She shook her head, rolling her eyes at him and tried to stop grinning though it was impossible when faced with the enthusiasm he was clearly trying to hide.
"I think maybe, considering the signs I'm seeing, that we are, it would certainly explain why you packed our passports." She said, turning her head back to the road in time to see him pull into the lane which according to the signs was definitely the way to the airport. "At least tell me if you're planning on taking me to the mainland?" She pressed, breathing out a sigh of relief when he took pity on her and shook her head. "Okay so if we're heading to the airport but we're not going to the mainland then that would leave the option of going to one of the surrounding islands. The only question is which one of them did you pick for us." She murmured quietly, mainly to herself, though it was clear that Steve had heard her by the response he gave her.
"You'll soon find out Danni, after all good things comes to those who wait." He stated, a teasing note to her voice causing her to smile again, something she found herself doing regularly in his company.
Danielle remained quiet as Steve focused his attention on his driving, pulling the truck into the crowded long-term parking area, it took them a few minutes to park in a spot and for Steve to kill the engine. He gave her another warm smile before he pushed open his door and climbed out. Danielle climbed out as well, following him to the back of the truck.
"I'm just going to need a second to get myself ready before we head inside Steve." She told him as she leaned into the trunk and keeping put in the code to her padlock, pulling it off and unzipping her suitcase, she glanced through it quickly before extracting the baseball cap which she had packed near the top. She zipped the suitcase back up, replacing the padlock before dropping the hat on top of it. She caught her hair up into a ponytail and wrapped it around itself until it was in a bun before reaching down and picking the cap up and putting it on, hiding her hair from view. A quick hunt through her small handbag revealed her sunglasses which she also slipped on. "Okay, I think I'm ready now, hopefully people will just look right past me now." She explained with a thumbs up at him.
"Stay here with the bags Danni while I go and deal with the ticket for the truck." He told her, jabbing his thumb over his shoulder in the direction of one of the ticket machines which were littered at spaced intervals around the car park.
"Easy enough Sweetheart." She assured him with a nod, looking around her once Steve had walked away towards the nearest machine. The car park was quiet but it was little surprise once she factored in what time it was. It was probably one of the main reasons why Steve had chosen this time for them to travel as it would give him the ability to limit the amount of people who would see them and identify them. Danielle might have been the supermodel but Steve was still better known to the residence of the islands then she was. She had noticed that people seem to easily recognise is tall frame and confident stride wherever they went though she doubted he had noticed the attention before, and if he had, he had certainly remained mute about it.
"Okay, I got the ticket, it will cover us for twelve days just in case" Steve announced as he approached her and opened the driver's door open, placing the ticket in view on the dashboard before he closed the door and locked it behind them, pushing the side mirror in before walking around the front of the truck and doing the same thing on her side.
"Happy?" She asked him with a tilt of her head, watching as he came up beside her and picked his bag up, shouldering it before grabbing her suitcase and ignoring her sound of complaint as he adjusted it and took her hand with his free hand.
"I'm very happy Danni" He told her as they headed towards the big white building in front of them. Danielle walked beside him, gripping his hand tightly as she they entered the building. It was a fairly small airport compared to some of the others which she had seen during her travels but it was still crowded making her thankful that she had someone with her, who seemed to know exactly where they should be going and the fastest way to get there.
She noticed as they walked that they were attracting quite a few looks but so far no one had made an attempt to approach them which she was glad of. She looked towards Steve when he pulled her to a stop at the check in desk for Hawaiian airlines.
"Do you want to check in your suitcase while we're here babe?" Steve asked her, moving it slightly in his hand as though he was bringing her attention to it. She gave it a quick considering look before she shook her head at him.
"There's no need for us to do that, this is the suitcase I bring with me for jobs I have. It will easily fit into the hold above out seats." She commented. He nodded at her, squeezing down on her hand before they turned and headed over to the security area, joining at the back of the small queue which had formed. They remained quiet, still holding hands with one another until it was their turn and they stepped forward.
"Commander McGarrett, we hadn't received word that you would be here today. Is this a work visit? I don't see Detective Williams with you though, normally by now we would have heard him or seen his hands flying through the air if he was." The dark-haired security guards remarked with a grin at Steve who laughed at the description of his partner. "Are you with another member of the team?" He continued to press, glancing around him before his eyes landed on Danielle, lowering quickly to take in their joined hands, before he looked up at Steve when he spoke.
"Detective Williams is staying behind and running the Five-O team while I'm away on vacation" Steve explained with a shrug at him.
"So, you're not on a work trip or here in an official compacity." The guard responded, making no effort to hide his smile before he looked back at Danielle who merely smiled at him remaining quiet. "Though obviously now I look its clear you're on vacation. Is this a friend of yours McGarrett or…"? His voice trailed off as he led them to the X-ray machines and set out two trays which Steve placed their bags in.
"She is my girlfriend" Steve replied with a roll of his eyes before he turned to look at her. "Danielle, this is Lewis Carter, he and I used to be in the same class as one another when I still lived here in Hawaii, Lewis this is my much better other half Danielle." Steve introduced, keeping the details about her to a minimum which she was grateful for.
"It's a pleasure to meet one of Steve's friends Mr Carter" Danielle responded, giving the other man another warm smile.
"If you're McGarrett's girlfriend then please call me Lewis" He replied with a good-natured grin at her before his face turned serious. "I'm sure I don't have to explain the drill to you McGarrett, take off your shoes and anything else which might set off the scanner into the box." He instructed, waving his hand towards the scanner. "You as well Danielle, you'll have to take your hat and sunglasses off as well so we can see your face for security reasons."
Danielle nodded, sighing as she did as she was instructed and lifted her leg up one at a time slipping off her ballet pumps and placing them into the same tray that contained her suitcase before reluctantly reaching up and taking off her hat and sunglasses as well. She ignored the wide-eyes look Lewis shot her which indicated to her that he had recognised her, and placed them on top of her shoes before she turned and headed through the scanner when the waiting security guard nodded at her. She waited again until she was giving the all clear before swiftly moving back to the luggage scanner, slipping her shoes back on before wrapping her hair back into a bun and putting her cap back on top of her head, her gaze flickering towards Steve as he re-joined her, quickly gathering their belongings together and holding out her sunglasses to her,
"I'll see you soon Lewis, we should meet up soon for a beer or something." Steve called over to the other man who merely lifted his hand up in acknowledgement.
"It was nice to meet you." Danielle added quickly as Steve wrapped his free arm around her waist and led her out of the security area and into the main hub of the airport.
"Our flight is leaving in twenty minutes so we should have enough time to head over to the gate in a leisurely fashion before we have to board the plane." He told her as he pulled her closer to him.
"Taking a leisurely stroll towards a plane is always a good thing." She replied, looking around her curiously as they made their way to the gate. Her eyes rising to look at the TV screen above them when Steve brought them to a halt beside one of them. "Departing to Kona international airport?" She read out, turning to look at him with a questioning look. "Isn't Kona airport on the Big Island?"
"Perhaps it is." Steve confirmed, flashing her a wide grin and a wink.
"This is the last boarding call for flight H118 to Kona international airport." The woman behind the counter called out, her dark brown eyes fixed on them making it clear that she was directing her comment at them. Steve pulled Danielle forward and handed over their tickets to the woman who took them from him, her eyes glancing down at them. Danielle noticed her eyes widening when she took in the name on the tickets before they flickered up towards her but her training thankfully held and she simply turned her attention towards Steve and directed her comment to him. "Thank you Commander McGarrett, if you and Miss Richardson would like to head through the doors behind us and down the tunnel then you'll find yourself at the plane. We hope that you both enjoy your flight with us today." She said, a slight tremor to her voice as she indicated the door she meant.
"I'm sure we will." Steve responded politely before he pushed Danielle towards the door and through it, turning to look at her as they made their way down the tunnel. "I'm guessing from hers and Lewis's reaction that they recognised you?" He asked her, an undercurrent of curiosity to his voice which had her responding with a nod before she spoke.
"It's most likely that they did," She told him before she sighed. "I'm afraid it tends to happen a lot when I'm out and about, I'm sorry about it, if there was something which I could do to make it stop then I would but being recognised is a price I pay with my job."
"Hey, no babe, you have absolutely nothing to be sorry about or to apologise for." He stated firmly, stopping them in the tunnel and pulling her close to him, kissing her hard on the mouth, he nipped at her lower lip before he pulled back with a pained look on his face. "I would kiss you senseless right now Danni if I could but if I did then we would not only miss our flight but probably get arrested for public indecency so it will have to wait for now." He said ruefully causing Danielle to laugh as they resumed their walk towards the plane.
Within minutes they were both in their seats with their seatbelts fastened, listening to the Captain give his usual speech about flight details before the plane began slowly taxiing down the runway, building up speed before taking off from the ground.
Danielle smiled at the flight attendant who approached them as soon as the seatbelt sign was off, serving them each with a glass of orange juice before she looked towards Steve with a questioning look when he nudged her gently in the side.
"Are you disappointed that we're only going to the Big Island?" He asked her cautiously, a relieved grin coming to his face when she instantly shook her head at his question.
"I'm in no way disappointed that we're going here, the truth is that when Caitlin first mentioned coming to Hawaii to get away, I suggested to her that we spent all out time here at the Big Island but she refused saying that we would be too isolated which was why we ended up on Oahu." She explained to him with smile.
"I'm not going to lie Babe, I'm kind of glad that she overruled you then, if you had been over on the Big Island then the two of us wouldn't have met each other." Steve pointed out.
"Well that is true, us meeting the way we did must have been fate" She agreed. "Besides, we can always do the Big Island on this vacation and then go to Maui or Kauai the next time we decide to go away together?" She suggested hopefully.
"That is an idea I am more than happy to get behind." He agreed, his grin widening as he settled back in his chair, his eyes drifting shut as he stretched his long legs out in front of him.
"Me too Sweetheart, me too." Danielle replied quietly, tilting her head and watching him for a moment before she leaned back in her chair and sipped at her juice.
Somehow, she had the feeling that this first trip would certainly be memorable.
