Takani Megumi sat alone in the clinic, watching her patient breathe. How far she had come from making opium for tyrants to sell. Opium meant to destroy. How far she had come from her cowering form, threatening to kill herself. How far she had come.
And why had she made the jump? Because one man had saved her life, saved her from herself. Now she looked down at the sleeping figure of this one man, of her top patient Himura Kenshin, formerly Hitokiri Battosai. She watched his chest rise and fall with each intake of breath, watched as his eyes flitted around, exploring some dream. She watched until the tears began to flow.
This wasn't supposed to happen. A doctor wasn't supposed to fall in love with her patient, especially when her patient was in love with another. It wasn't supposed to happen, but it had, and there was no denying it. Reaching down and holding her breath, she stroked Kenshin's red hair, praying that he wouldn't wake up.
Taking a few long strands in her hand, she intertwined her fingers in the mane that was normally kept back in his ponytail.
"Oh, Ken-san, why did you choose her?"
Another tear fell, this time landing on the back of her hand. She let it rest there, the salt water forming a little bead of moisture. Kenshin drew a sharp intake of breath, and Megumi's eyes snapped to him, watching as one of his hands drifted to the wound on his side. Megumi wasn't surprised by his reaction; she had seen this too many times. While he was awake, he never showed a sign of pain, but when sleep overtook him, he became less of the hitokiri he used to be.
Reaching out with a courage that she never would have had, had Kenshin been awake, Megumi grasped his hand, moving it from his bandaged left side. Another speckling of tears fell from her eyes, landing on the floor. She knew this was wrong, and that he would never return her feelings, that he loved Kaoru, but she wanted to be his so much. Every part of her very being screamed for her to at least try, to win Kenshin as her own, and to put an end to this madness.
But still she resisted.
Letting go of his hand, Megumi covered her face, letting the warm tears flow once more onto her hand. She had lost, she knew it, but part of her wouldn't accept that fact. A part of her still wanted to try, thinking, dreaming that one day Kenshin would choose her over Kaoru.
She knew she was a fool.
Lowering her hand so it covered her mouth, Megumi surveyed Kenshin's sleeping form. This was surely the only time she would ever lay eyes upon the sleeping ex-hitokiri. He was Kaoru's and there was no changing that fact.
"Ken-san, Ken-san! Why? Why did you pick her? Why? Why? Why did you choose her?"
And why didn't you choose me?
