"Arrogant Pig"
Lily sat with books and parchment scattered across the table. The look of concentration that had been etched across her face for the best part of an hour had lessened and she was openly staring at the transfiguration section.
James walked up and down the rows of books, running his fingers along the spines of the faded tomes, occasionally pausing to look at the list of book titles on a ragged piece of parchment sticking out of his pocket.
He glanced behind him and saw Lily staring at him. 'No' he thought, the smile slipping from his face, 'she hates me, she must be looking at someone else.' He pulled out 'Transfiguration: Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them' and tucked it away under his arm and continued his way along the isle.
Without even realising it, Lily's eyes followed James as moved. He pulled his free had through his hair and Lily jolted back to her senses as she realised how openly she had been staring. She blushed and hastily looked down at her book. But the words just sat in front of her, she couldn't comprehend what they meant, she was too busy with a bigger problem - why was she staring at James Potter? Why did she enjoy watching him? And why did her stomach flutter with the pages of the book he was flicking through? She couldn't be… 'No. No, I don't. He is an arrogant pig who is too far up his own arse.' She thought determinately.
A cry and a loud clatter of books drew the attention of everyone in the library as a small second year dropped a mountain of books. He stood there, wishing a hole would appear in the ground for him to sink into, turning red as the reproachful eyes of everyone turned to him. But before he knew it, James Potter, the James Potter, was striding towards him. With one fluid wand motion the books rose up in a neat pile and landed smoothly onto a nearby table. "Alright mate?" James said following the boy's eye line and seeing a worried look cross over his scarlet face "Ah. Don't worry about Pince – she doesn't like anyone. Except Sirius for some reason, and perhaps Evans." The boy let out a reluctant smile and thanked James before carefully gathering up his books and hurrying from the library.
James turned and to his surprise, he found Lily standing behind him. She looked at her feet and said quietly "That was a very decent thing you did there Potter." James smiled, "Why thank you Evans, contrary to what you seem to believe, I'm not always an arrogant pig" Lily flushed and James let out a low laugh "Yep, you said that out loud, quietly, I'll give to that, but still out loud." Seeing James laugh like that, gently not harshly making fun of everyone, made Lily smile back at him "I'm not going to apologise Potter." she said.
"I wouldn't expect you to Evans" and still smirking he grabbed his books. Lily turned to leave and with a small wave to Madam Pince she muttered to James "You are right, for some reason, she doesn't seem to hate me."
