She was staring again and she knew it. She couldn't help it though, she didn't trust him. He shouldn't, wouldn't be trusted, at least by her. Her face was set in a glare that she couldn't replace even if she wanted to. He looked up from his food and caught her eye before leaving the fire side and retreating to a dark corner. Just like every night.
She couldn't understand it. Aang loved him like the brother he never had, Sokka liked him and treated him like a good friend, and Toph had fully accepted him into their group. Couldn't they see that he was untrustworthy? That he was dangerous? Was she the only one who understood?
Zuko was not to be trusted. She had learned that at least. She had learned not to forgive people who had crushed her heart a thousand times over. Zuko was almost perfect except for the fact that he had hurt her more than anyone ever had.
Everyday she asked herself why. Why had he gotten to her so quickly under Ba Sing Se? She could never understand why. And she could never understand why he betrayed them at all. She looked down at her food and frowned before putting it down and telling the gang that she was heading to bed.
When she rounded the corner she spotted him. He was leaning against a wall, but as soon as he noticed her presence he straightened. She walked right by him. She could hear his foot steps following her. Always following her. She ignored them and walked faster. Faster and faster, until she broke out in a run.
He caught her arm. She turned to face him. "We need to talk." He said his eyes boring into hers. They were so yellow. His eyes so very different than hers. She felt a pain in her chest and she pulled away from him.
"No we don't." She replied and she walked away once more and this time he let her go. At least for the night. He was always there. He wouldn't just go away and somehow that comforted her deeply. Always there, always following her, capturing her, wanting her. Always.
That's why she slept well at night. That's why she felt strong enough to live. He was her reason. He was the one person that would never leave her, ever. Somewhere she knew that he loved her. She couldn't decide to be happy or sad about that. It did put her to sleep at night though, that and those eyes. The ones so very different from hers. And that had to be something, right?
