Deidara, Sasori has found, has strange obsessions.

There is his obsession with explosions, with birds, with the clay he makes his birds with, with being free (it's an unspoken one, but Sasori knows Deidara wants to be free from the Akatsuki, from being a missing-nin, from everything), with adding that annoying little 'un' on to the ends of sentences. There are a million and one other little strange things he's obsessed with too, all adding onto his quirky personality.

But Deidara's most prominent obsession, as of late, has been the wind. Deidara has a habit for talking about the strangest things, things that most people don't normally think about (why does everyone in Suna seem to have red hair, un? Sasori-danna, why's Konaha in the country of fire, un?), and his rambling tend to revolve around his obsessions. Hey, Sasori-danna! The wind's powered by the sun, did you know that?—(Sasori has never once asked where Deidara's learned these things, simply because he knew he was probably better off not knowing).

When they are out on missions, out traveling, Sasori has woken up in the morning—(though it's not really waking up if he doesn't sleep)—to see Deidara outside, standing out on the balcony railing with his arms spread out, catching the wind. And it's then Sasori thinks Deidara's just like a little kid sometimes, standing out there, looking more like he's nine than nineteen. He's wondered why Deidara stands out there many times before, but has never bothered to ask.

There's one morning, though, when they're staying at some nameless Inn in some nameless town, and he's woken by the wind spilling through the open-window, the breeze stirring his blanket—(sometimes Sasori tries to remember what a cool breeze feels like. He can't ever seem to).

He blinks, slowly, and wonders a moment why in the world the window's open when it was closed last night, before remembering Deidara. Sasori gets up, not slowly but not quickly either, before walking over to window. He's slightly puzzled when he sees no railing Deidara could stand on, but then notices a ladder out of the corner of his eyes, right next to the far edge of the window. Carefully, very carefully, he puts one foot on a rung and hoists himself out, holding on to the ladder tightly. Sasori's not sure why he's doing this, he'd rather be inside preparing for the day, but he feels completely and utterly compelled to do it anyway.

It takes only a few moments to reach the roof, and Sasori's not surprised to find Deidara standing there, arms spread wide, Akatsuki coat billowing around as the wind blows. Wind chimes sway and play in the breeze from a few floors below, the soft melody floating upwards and away with the air. The whole city's viewable from where they are, and with the sun shining down on it, it looks peaceful and serene, like nothing bad could ever happen.

It's time like these Sasori wishes he could actually feel, not just touch.

It's somewhat unsettling for Deidara to be quiet so long, so after a few moments more, Sasori breaks silence (for once).

"Deidara," Sasori says to get his attention. Deidara doesn't look over at him, but gives a small 'un' to show he's listening. "Why do you love the wind so much?"

There's silence for a moment, and Sasori almost repeats his question, when Deidara speaks.

"Because, Sasori-danna," Deidara starts slowly, looking back at him, arms still spread and cloak still billowing around him, giving Sasori a smile he's never seen before, "the wind is free."
