Fake It

Spoilers: Nope

Summary: Introspective Conan/Shinichi angst? Anyone?

I don't own DC/MK, but if I did, I'd keep everyone in miniature replicas of their former habitats. Except for Conan and Kaito. I'd take them out and play with them. 'Cause they're fun. :D

It hadn't even been a full year since he had become Conan, but he was starting to feel lost. What would happen now if he returned to his proper age? God, he couldn't even say when anymore! He didn't belong in his old world any longer. He had faked his way into being Conan for so long that now Shinichi felt like an act, too.

Oh, he still seemed to care for the same things, to those who knew who to watch. He was still a detective, still chased murderers and thieves, still pursued the truth. But when he thought too hard about his own actions, he felt like such a hypocrite. He was crossing lines left and right, lines that the great detective Kudou Shinichi should never even think about crossing. Lies piled on top of lies, and it seemed like just the slightest disturbance would send everything toppling down, showing his flaws to the world.

But whose were they? Edogawa Conan wasn't Kudou Shinichi anymore. But if Kudou Shinichi had become Edogawa Conan, what had happened to him? Had he sold his soul to fool the Black Org? Parts of it were fading away already. The law, which Shinichi had always followed religiously, was sometimes overlooked completely; he only realized it hours, sometimes days after a case was over. Even worse was that he didn't always feel regret. Something like that should feel wrong, shouldn't it?

No matter how many reasons he had, at the end of the day, Shinichi knew they were all just excuses, all just dragging out the inevitable. He was slipping, falling down. He just didn't know how far he'd fall, or how long he'd be able to mask it from the outside world.

A/N: Could you tell? It was a pseudo-song-fic to "Fake It," by Seether. I fell in love with this song, and thought it would be perfect for Kaito, actually, but I can't make him angst that much. But he can totally fake it with the best of them.

Sooo, uh, an official hello to the DC/MK fandom? I've been lurking for over a year, I think...

I may not respond to reviews, since they're routed to an old email address, and I'm scared of the backlog. But many, many thanks to anyone who does enjoy this story and takes the time to review!
