Piece by Piece

I lied.

To my family,

to my clan,

to him.

Him.

And we'll never be the same.

"We are not the kits of Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw."

I could hear his heart as it broke apart.

I could hear it as it shattered,

sending pieces where I'd never find them,

where I'd never be able to piece them back together.

His heart broke.

And mine did too.

He avoids me.

I know this is my fault,

but I can't help but feel angry.

I had too.

I had to do it for my sister.

I had to do it for them.

Why can't he see that.

My heart's shattered.

It's been moons.

Moons since we last spoke.

Moons since I've heard his voice.

Moons since I've seen the one I loved more than anything on this earth.

I'm starting to crumble

"Please!"

I call out, begging him to answer.

When he turns, I see hope in his eyes.

He's scowling, but he misses me.

He misses me.

The first pieces are falling together.

"Trust me."

He's skeptical.

He doesn't want to believe me.

He doesn't want to trust me when I broke his heart.

He shakes his head no,

but his eyes say yes.

Another piece falls into place.

"I'm sorry."

I need him to know.

Instead, he just walks away.

But I can see how his ears perked up,

how the tiniest hint of a smile flashed on his face,

how warmth flooded his amber eyes.

He forgives me.

More pieces come together.

"I love you."

He licks the top of my head in a silent gesture.

His heart isn't the same as it was.

It never will be.

But piece by piece I'm putting him back together.

Putting us back together.
