Chapter 1: Crash

The sapphire waters of the South Pacific glistened from the window of the aircraft. From his aisle seat, Jack Wilks sipped a Bloody Mary as he pored over the files his employers had given him. The pictures of two young women stared at him as he rummaged through the papers. The two women bore an almost uncanny resemblance to each other, with both having black hair, blue eyes, and some degree of pale skin. His eyes darted from caption to photograph, taking in the differences between the two. One caption read Elizabeth. The other read Eleanor.

He soaked in the photographs, his mind examining every difference. Elizabeth appeared to be shorter, roughly 5'6", with her big blue eyes giving her an adorable affect. Eleanor appeared to be at least six feet, was much paler, and her eyes bore an aloof, commanding look.

Jack closed his eyes and let sleep overtake him.

NEW YORK CITY

THREE WEEKS EARLIER:

There was a banging noise on Jack's door.

"Mister Wilks?"

Jack opened the door, and an older woman entered his apartment. Her blond hair was done up in a style that screamed "prim and proper", as did the light blue dress she wore.

"You want something to drink, Miss-"

"Lamb. Doctor Sofia Lamb. And thanks for the offer, but I must decline."

The doctor's host reached for a bottle of hard cider lying on the table and poured himself a small glass.

"Now, what brings someone like you to my place?"

"The sign on the building listed you as a private investigator. I need your services."

Jack paused mid-sip.

"Doctor Lamb, I'm done with the business. Cults, insurance fraud, extramarital affairs- I've seen it all."

"Hear me out, please." came Lamb's reply.

Jack leaned into his chair.

"I'm listening."

"About a month ago, my daughter Eleanor was on a cruise in the South Pacific with a friend of hers named Elizabeth DeWitt. The two of them vanished into thin air. If you can find them, you will be will compensated."

"How much?"

"Five hundred thousand dollars."

"Deal."

Suddenly, Jack awoke to the blaring of an alarm and to the sensation of free-falling.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We are experiencing major mechanical failure and will be making an unscheduled landing- madre di dios! All passengers, brace for impact-"

Within four minutes, Jack felt the plane slam onto the ground. Before he could react, a woman's purse went flying from an overhead compartment and hit him in the head, knocking him out.
