Drabble – Home/Lost – 100 Words
Alexander had a million things swirling around in his head, his mind was thinking of several thoughts at once. He left the meeting hall and set off to his next destination. He made many turns and twists and it was several minutes before he looked up to see where he was.
A look of confusion clouded his face and he stopped and looked all around him, including the direction he had just come from. He didn't recognize anything around him and he turned to go back in the direction he had just come.
It took a couple of minutes before he would admit to himself that he had no idea where he was or how he got here.
Several people past by him and he nodded back to them as they acknowledged the Kings' presence. His pride would not allow him to ask direction in his own palace. Besides, he was not lost, he had only 'misplaced himself 'in his own home.
Alexander found the kitchens, laundry, servant's quarters and the winery but still was helplessly lost. He couldn't even find a door to go outside to recapture his bearings. He decided he would swallow his pride and ask the next person to help him find his way back to his known surroundings.
Rounding the next corner, he spotted a familiar figure leaning up against the hallway wall. He had his arms crossed and one knee bend with his foot resting on the wall. His face was bowed down slightly and his was chewing on his lower lip.
Alexander walked forward and kept going as he past the man.
"Enjoy your walk?' asked Hephaestion.
"Aye, and for your information I wasn't lost." replied Alexander not looking at his companion.
They had arrived at an intersection with the hallways going in four different directions. Alexander stopped and hesitated a second too long before looking at Hephaestion and repeating again that he had not been lost.
"Aye," said Hephaestion not moving forward in any direction, watching Alexander's' face with a slight smile.
After a long very pregnant pause with neither man moving, Hephaestion saved the Kings pride and started down the right hallway.
"By the way, Asia and the lands to the East are that way." Hephaestion said with nary a smile on his handsome face pointing off to his left.
No words were heard in reply, but the glare spoke volumes.
