The Fall of Boromir
I had to save the halflings. That was all I could think. The orcs came in endless waves and I could feel myself tiring. Then what I said to Frodo comes back into my mind and I fight all the harder. My blade sang through their foul necks. I reach for the Horn and blow as hard as I can to no avail. The only thing I call is more orcs. But it is day, how do they have the strength to fight like this? All thoughts flee from my mind as the first arrow hits. It drives through my shoulder and I stagger backwards. They keep coming and I raise my blade to cleave a few more heads off. The second arrow slams into my stomach. I hear the halflings' battle cry and they rush the huge orcs recklessly. I look up in time to see the Elven abominations carry them off. Another shaft pierces my chest and I gasp for breath, falling to my knees. When I look up again, it is straight into the face of the biggest orc I have ever seen. He nocks an arrow to his bow and I close my eyes in shame, waiting for death. I failed them, Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and even Aragorn. He pulls the string back, his eyes glittering in malicious pleasure. I hold my breath and wait for the end to come. I hear a yell and Aragorn is there. The orc and him exchange blows, but I do not see it all. Then Aragorn is kneeling over me, sorrow in his eyes. He begins to pull the arrows out, but I stop him, it is over, I know this. I will never see the White Tower again, nor hear the sweet sound of the silver trumpets calling me home. I hear Aragorn promise Minas Tirith will not fall and I feel a kind of peace wash over me, knowing he would keep it with his life. I tell him about Frodo and what I said. I failed him, but he tells me otherwise. My last words I choke out through all of my pain. "I would follow you, my brother, my captain, my king." My life slips away and I pass into darkness and the sweet release of death.
