Tomoya was lying in bed staring at the ceiling. His body was tired from working all day, but his mind wouldn't shut down. He glanced at the clock and saw 2:27 glowing red. He turned his head to look at Nagisa. His wife. He still couldn't really believe it- that she'd said yes, that she had even dated him in the first place. She was beautiful and he- well, he was rough and a slacker and mean and- and unworthy.
This city had never felt like home to Tomoya. He hated it. Too many bad memories. Most of them involved his father. But now he had Nagisa. She had become his home. 'God, when did I become such a pathetic romantic?' He thought to himself, rolling over to face Nagisa.
She slept soundly next to him. Sometimes, she breathed so lightly in her sleep that it scared him. He stared at her and took in everything: her pale skin, her soft lips, her hair strewn across her pillow. She was beautiful. 'And she deserves so much better than some no-good piece of trash like me,' he thought to himself.
Suddenly, Nagisa stirred. She blinked sleepily and rubbed her eyes.
"Tomoya?" She whispered, "Why are you awake?" She gasped at the sight of him, "Tomoya! Why are you crying? What's wrong?"
He hadn't even noticed the tears that began to stream down his face. He didn't know exactly why he was crying, but once he started, he couldn't stop. Nagisa, who was sitting now, held him to her chest, stroking his hair.
"Please Tomoya, tell me what's wrong. Did you have a bad dream?" She asked, her voice full of worry.
After a minute, Tomoya sat up. He looked into her eyes. He leaned in and gently kissed her. "I love you, you know that?" He whispered as he put his forehead against hers. "I love you more than I can ever tell you."
"And I love you, Tomoya. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me." She said, smiling up at him. He looked away in shame. "Tomoya?"
"But that's the thing- I'm not!" He said, anger and pain taking over his voice. "I'm the worst thing that ever happened to you- I'm a slacker, and I'm mean, and my dad-" his voice hitched at the mention of that man, "My dad will never leave us alone. Even when he's not here, his shadow will follow us everywhere. And-and what if I end up like my dad? What- what if-" At this point, Tomoya broke down completely in tears.
After a minute, he felt Nagisa's hands on his face. "Tomoya, that'll never happen. Because you're kind and good and you work so hard. And it's okay that your father is always around. He is your father after all. But you shouldn't worry so much about that because you are Tomoya and I know that once people get to know Tomoya Okazaki, they'll love him as much as I do." She said all this smiling even though her face was also covered in tears. "And Tomoya, I stand by what I said. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you Tomoya Okazaki."
He couldn't do anything but stare for a few seconds. Then, he pulled her to him tight, holding on for dear life. "I love you too, Nagisa." He whispered, the two of them drifting off to sleep in each other's arms.
