Your expression of utter pain after colliding with the truck is forever engraved in his mind.
As is the last look of his horrified face eternally imprinted into you.
.
He wants to protect you.
He's been with you for so long, your closest friend, yet you've long before you realise his feelings for you. You talk of pop stars and fashion trends, yet you've never noticed the slight tinge of red on his cheeks as he tells you "you're good enough as you are". How he tries to slip his hand into yours shyly. How he adores your company more than you could ever imagine.
And how you always fail to notice.
.
But you still want to protect him.
You want to protect him as the truck screeches your way. You want to protect him when you run towards the falling pillar. You want to protect him when you fall down the flight of stairs.
You want to protect him, even if this goes on for weeks, summers, years, each impending doom, each numbing pain, each distraught look. Each cackled ha-ha-ha of the summer heat laughing at your dismay.
In the end, everything reverts back to that summer, that heat-haze daze.
But you still want to protect him.
.
And when that day arrives, as he yanks you away and sprints forward — nononowhatishedoinghibiyastop — the blood sprays across your face and you scream. You scream because how could he be so clueless? Can't he realise that you've been trying to protect him, all this while? That him dying would lead you back to the summer daze all over again? That nothing would change? Why? Why would he do this? Why would he hurt you like this?
You're holding him and screaming someonecalltheambulancesomeonesavehibiya, tears screaming down your face. Yet all he does is smile and wipe your tears away with a trembling hand. Tells you not to cry. Because now, everything would be alright.
Except he didn't know. He didn't know that it never could be.
In the fading sky, the summer heat laughs.
.
On the summer of August 15th, clock striking noon, he bolts out of his bed. He checks his phone for the date and screams.
He's failed, again.
(and you have, too.)
