Emerald Eyes and a Shattering Heart

His gaze was drawn to her like a moth to the flame. His eyes would seek her out as soon as she entered the hall. Even if he closed them he could still feel her presence in the room, could still hear her beautiful voice. Her hair dancing in the wind; falling down her back like liquid fire. Her eyes always so warm and kind. Her emerald eyes sparkling as her laughter fills the air. Like a dream haunting him day and night.

Yet as soon as he reaches out to her all warmth leaves her. Like the warmth is vanishing and he only grabs to through a trail of smoke. Her eyes turn cold as she regards him. At that moment every single word he planned to say died in his throat. Like an actor he plays the confident one, yet on the inside he is panicking because he knows. He knows that the word he now utters are not the ones he wants to say, they are not the sincere words his heart scream at him and he knows that she hates the words that leave his lips. Her gaze grows colder and he can feel his stomach drop. She opens her mouth and words of hate for him leave her lips. She is screaming at him, her cheeks turning as red as her hair. In the past he would have been able to shut the words out and only concentrate on how pretty she looked with red cheeks and blazing eyes. No every word she said reached him and they hurt. In that moment he can feel his eyes sting with unshed tears but he will not let them fall, he will not show them to her. Each word out of her mouth is like a blade, sharpened to hurt him. With every harsh word out of her mouth his heart got another crack. Till his heart shattered into a million fragments. The same fragments his friends had glued together the night before. Before the last words leave her lips he walks out into the forest, whose quiet welcomes him with open arms. Every day the pattern repeats itself. Determination, hope, rejection, despair, pain and patching his heart back together. Yet he can't take it anymore. He gives up, he cannot take his heart being shattered once again.

He gave up the dream of ever being with her, the dream of her loving him, the hope that she might have a change of heart, he gave up on trying to impress her, on following her like a lost puppy but he could never give up loving her. For she had his heart for as long as he still breaths. He sits there in the quiet forest, letting the tears fall. His resolve growing he had to leave her alone. With a heavy heart and sad eyes he returned to the castle. Hidden behind the forests green leaves warm emerald eyes watched his retreating figure.
