A/N: A little sad, but this mini ficlet popped into my head and had to be written. Please let me know what you think. :)

She wished she could be happy.
Anyone else would have been. They would have laid out in the sun for hours, lapping up the lazy sunshine that warmed the sands of the beach. They would have walked along the shore at sunset, enjoying the soft lap of the warm waves along their toes as they reveled in the peaceful quiet of the evening. They would have listened to the gentle songs of the birds, floating along the wind as the music gently met their ears.
But Sara Scofield wasn't just anyone.
There were moments when she thought she would be okay. Days where she'd hold Lincoln's hand, walking along the beach together as they enjoyed each other's company. Sometimes they'd share stories about the past, reliving the few moments when they'd felt safe and free and happy, like they'd always wanted. Other times they'd simply walk along in silence, lost in their own thoughts.
Sometimes Sara would pretend that someone else was holding her hand as they walked along the sands of the beach. She would convince herself that if she looked up, he'd be standing there, smiling back at her.
But Michael would never be there to hold her hand again.
Tears never ceased to well up in her eyes when that fact continually returned to her thoughts. It hurt to have to face every day, knowing that she would never again see Michael's smile. Hear his laugh. Hold his hand. Kiss his lips.
Some mornings she'd wake up and roll over in her bed, a smile on her lips as she prepared to wake her sleeping husband. But that smile would fade when she found the other side of the bed empty. Cold. The same as it had been for the past few months.
The pain still hadn't lessened.
She ached for him so much that her very soul hurt. She could feel herself reaching out for him, from her toes to the very tips of her fingers. There wasn't a thing in the world she wouldn't give to have one more day with him. One more minute. One more kiss.
But she knew she would never have that luxury again.
Because he was gone.
