Fun At The Fair
"Why do we have to go to the fair? We're not teenagers!" Zoe Hanna huffed at her partner, Max Walker.
"Because fairs are fun!" He replied.
"I hate the rides. Even the teacups make me feel sick. Can't we stay in and watch Britain's Got Talent?"
"Nope, the fair's in town for this weekend only, therefore we are going out tonight." Answered Max, standing up and switching the TV off. At this, Zoe scowled.
"Ma-ax!" she whinged.
"No ifs, no buts. Go and get changed into something fairly warm, and be quick about it."
"Fine." The consultant replied, realizing that she couldn't get out of it.
She changed into a blue and white striped jumper, blue tight jeans, and a blue scarf to match. Shoes were more of a difficult matter, but she eventually settled on a pair of chestnut coloured boots.
"You look stunning, Zoe." Max said when Zoe came back into the living area of their recently purchased flat.
"Thank you, but I haven't finished yet." Zoe touched up her makeup, and searched the small cupboard in which they kept their coats etc for something to keep her warm. They hadn't unpacked everything yet, so her choice was rather limited.
Max saw her frowning. "D'you want to borrow my Holby hoodie?"
"Yes please!" Smiled his partner.
Max gave Zoe his hoodie, the consultant grabbed her keys, purse, and phone, and they went out.
"How far is the fairground?" Zoe asked, shivering slightly in spite of her warm attire.
"Not far, I promise." Said Max, taking her hand.
"Good."
The pair eventually got to the fairground, the smell of chips, candyfloss, and hotdogs in the air and the music from the various rides in their ears.
"How about the Big Wheel?"
"I hate heights."
"Dodgems?"
"No."
"Teacups?"
"No."
"The whole point in coming here was for us to have fun."
"And we still can have fun." Zoe answered, heading towards a stand selling candyfloss.
"So are you going to get some then?" Max enquired.
"Yep, stay with me!" The female ordered.
"Fine" Max smiled, unable to resist her charm.
He strode over and pulled her into his arms. Zoe stood on tiptoe to give him a kiss, her height somewhat reduced without her infamous heels.
"Zoe?"
"Mm hmm?"
"I love you you know."
"I know. I love you too." Zoe answered, kissing him again.
They got some candyfloss, and Zoe dragged her partner over to the hook a duck stall.
"Hold my candyfloss, I'm going to try and win something, I used to be ace at these when I was a kid." She ordered.
"Okay." Max said.
Zoe scrabbled around in her purse for some spare change, and paid the stallholder, who then passed her a hook.
At random, Zoe set her sights on a purple plastic duck and maneuvered her hook in order to catch it.
She turned it over to inspect the number, and was pleased to see a large number 10, which meant that she had won any item on the stall.
"Max! What shall I choose?" Zoe asked.
"I dunno!"
"How about..." Zoe's eye was on a goldfish in a plastic bag.
"No, Zoe!" Max protested.
"Oh, come on!" Zoe begged.
"Fine..." Max sighed.
"Knew I'd win you round!" She beamed in triumph, choosing a fish and taking his hand.
"So what shall we name him? Or her."
"How about Zax?" Max suggested.
"Like our names, but mixed together? I like that." Zoe decided.
The couple went around the fairground, and Max even managed to persuade Zoe to have a go on the dodgems.
When it got darker and even more chilly, Max suggested that they go home.
"We have to get Zax a bowl first, he can't live in a plastic bag, and I know for a fact that the Pets At Home store in Holby is open late tonight." Replied Zoe, firmly.
The porter sighed. "Okey doke. Did you enjoy yourself?"
"Yes, actually." Smiled Zoe.
